Picking the new van up next week. Have been to view it and all is well. Bearing in mind it's £80K+:cry: what would folk consider the best way to pay? I can set up a transfer for the total to arrive on the day we pick it up, but am a bit concerned there might be a glitch and we end up sitting around waiting for the money to get through. Other possibility is to do 3 lots of £20K, mobile banking, over preceding 3 days and the balance when we pick up, then final balance on the day. Our bank has £25K limit a day for transfers with mobile/online banking.

pay full amount by debit card , but only after you have seen the van and are happy with it ..

you could check with your bank before hand that they are ok about that.. but I've never had a problem

that's what I always do

We paid the balance for ours (nearly £40k) at the time of collection just with our debit card (NatWest) using the dealership's Chip and Pin terminal. (I had been expecting to have to arrange a bank transfer).

I did it using the daily mobile banking limits - daily maximum transfers - and then a final payment by debit card on transfer of the vehicle. Its a pain, I know. Just keep telling yourself that the bank is protecting your hard earned "wad" - so go with them, enjoy the inefficiency and focus your mind on not bashing your new baby on the gateposts.

I did a £100 online transfer to the dealer prior to collection to set them up as a recognised payee. Then transferred the balance after the handover inspection and completion of face to face paperwork and their online DVLA registration.

No limit with Revolut either.

You used to be able to do that when Debit cards only had a 50p charge but now they charge a percentage like CC, so dealers won't take them. You can see why as it would cost them a few grand on most transactions.

Not so with some business accounts. See screenshots for Lloyds. Free for debit card payments. The killer is cash handling - 1%.

That 80k motorhome is going to cost the dealership nearly £800 in cash handling fees if you turned up with real money! (They wouldn't accept that amount of cash anyway due to security and money laundering issues).

They normally only allow deposit by credit card plus not likely to have an 80k credit limit😀
But, if you only pay a part of the payment by credit card, you still get some protection.

For large payments, sometimes I used to use Bank Cheques.
It was by prior arrangement and there was a charge.

New Banking rules may now have changed this? 🤔

The dealer we have the van on order states they won't take debit cards for final payment & my mates company now has to pay a percentage on DC payments.

Last van was paid for by my Starling Euro Debit Card. Called them the day before to warn them of the transaction. It went through without even being deferred, no calls nothing. Inserted card, entered pin and out printed the receipt. Of course this was only done after final inspection of the van ensuring everything was in order.

£126,000 paid via 13 different 0% credit cards with up to 27 months to pay them off. Put the money in a high 'interest account' and just paid the minimum each month until I needed to pay that card off in full.

How on earth did you get 13 0% credit cards with those limits? I would have thought your credit score would have dived after the first 2 or 3 applications. Also, credit card transactions would cost the dealer.

Bank transfers for me. Did 2 or 3 and before pick up (call me stupid but I just trusted all would be ok)

How did you get away with that, it would have cost the dealer over 3 grand in charges.

Online Santander transfer via the app.
They give you a scam warning before submitting the request.
Basically asking if you know and trust the payee.
I do it every month transferring ALL my money to her account.
I don't think that will work on over 100 grand.

Problem now with 0% Credit Cards is there is something like a 3% fee which sounds good but generally only for 12 months.

I really didn’t think the U.K. had that many credit card providers, appreciate there are many many credit cards but they are underwritten by a main bank and you normally cannot have more than one 0% deal with each provider. You did well convincing the Motorhome company, it must have been a heavy hit on their profit, charges would have been in the thousands. Good for you using the system to your advantage.

The other way to pay is a chaps payment costs about £20 instant and can be used for high value amounts.
