Evening everyone, I've bought a Huawei e5577s router and am wondering what recommendations people have for data only Sims for use in Europe?. I'm planning a three month trip but not expecting to use the internet heavily,
Thank all.

We're using Sky Mobile right now in Spain, no restrictions planned and allows you to piggyback unused. Not sure if it will work in a mini but pretty good tethering as long as the phone is by a window.
Thanks jongood, Im using a sky mobile sim in my phone so could be a very useful option cheers.

To use this service i think you have to order your sim card. I think they come from Canada.
Then you buy and assign to that sim card a "Data Package" of your choice.
I also think that you get an "American" phone number.
I am not using this service so have no knowledge of how good or bad or how expensive it is.
I merely show the link for your info.
I've just had a look at that. $110.00 (£80 odd) for 90 x days. :(

Not for me thanks.

Jock. :)

At the moment the best choice is a SKY sim or two. We've got three, two in our smartphones and one in the Huawei mifi. That way we can move data around as needed via the piggybank. I've built up 120Gb in the piggybank which will be more than enough for tv and Internet use.

Ive wondered about this for poorer signal areas but not got a spare sim with me.

Does that mean that Sky don't have a data cap when roaming in the EU or what the other providers call a "fair usage policy"

I have looked through their Terms and can't find any mention of limits

Have looked into https://www.wraptel.com/ and £26 for 30 days unlimited data throughout Europe seems good, as no buying different sims, no worries about time spent anywhere, no data limits🧐

But the small print fair usage, states 500mb per day limit then speed is throttled to 384kbs till midnight. So effectively not unlimited 🙁, no use for streaming real shame 👎

No limit AFAIK. They have said as much

Sky Mobile

Roaming will remain free with Sky Mobile, it says.

A spokesperson said: "Sky Mobile customers will not be charged roaming charges in EU countries and will be able to continue to use their data, call and text allowances as they do in the UK."

Its seems that id still do have a fair usage limit but doesnt kick in until after month 4. At 0.25p/mb

That was last year and since then it looks like they've changed it as this seems to imply that you can only do the above if you have a roaming passport.

It's also mentioned in this recent article:

I think you're misreading that. There is a full stop and then it goes onto talk about the passport for outside europe. I used 55gb in spain last month and still clocking them up.

Yes we've got three identical sims from Sky on our single account. All three show up in the "Manage Piggybank" part of the account. The downside of course is that if the O2 Sky signal is poor then we don't have an alternative sim but I've got a SMARTY account as a back up if needed.

Also looked a the "Roaming Passport" section in Sky Help. There's no way to apply for this so it's obviously an automatic feature.

I hope so but it's under the heading of Roaming Passports, for the EU/EEA you need the standard one, but if you are outside you need the Passport Plus, that's how I read it. The below is on their website and clearly states you can use your package WITH a roaming passport, there is no mention of being able to do this without one:

For what it's worth Tesco use O2 network but have a different take on roaming and don't set any limits or fair use restrictions. Of course O2 is owned by Telefonica and being Spanish the coverage you receive in Spain and Portugal is pretty good. Tesco prices are quite good too.

Just spoken to a real person at Sky - Yes a real person!
He said that you do not need to apply for a roaming passport it's just a marketing term  The conditions are automatically applied when you use your phone in that country.
So that's that then.

Just had a look at Tescomobile, they do have a fair use policy but no data restrictions, basically majority of use over a 4 month rolling period must be UK based. They give you a 2 weeks leeway as well so 10 weeks ish, this fits in well for us as 8 to 10 weeks is the max we usually go away for.

Asda mobile also have very similar restrictions to Tesco, but they are on Vodafone.

Both the above are on 30 day contracts and the bundles are (I think) easily changed/stopped, I prefer this as we are only using them abroad, UK is sorted. Sky looks great but requires 12 month contract not something I am interested in.

You 're reading it wrong. It says that eu roaming is included and then it has a full stop. THEN it says IF you're roaming outside Europe THEN you need the passport. Sorry for the caps but you're not paying attention :giggle::giggle:

Thanks MikenPauline, with a local sim is usage still capped at 12gb? Or does that only apply to UK Sims?
No cap with a local sim - you get all the gbs you pay for. By the way, our dutch neighbours on bonterra park tell us that their Dutch contract sim is also capped at 15gb in France and Spain. Seems the media like to portray capping as a consequence of brexit but in reality a lot of EU countries are also applying it.

Am I missing something
If you purchase a 100gb sim in Spain I would expect to be able to use all 100 gb in Spain but if I move to Portugal or France the sim will probably be capped for roaming.

That's brilliant, thanks MikenPauline, seems the best option to buy local when I arrive in Spain, cheers for that.

Don’t know what happens if you take it outside Spain. Sorry

I believe there is a blanket ban on roaming charges across EU countries. It applied to the UK pre Brexit. So the 100 gb should be good in Portugal.

As I understand the conditions of the "Simyo" data sim you can use your full quota in Spain but roaming in UK or rest of EU as was is limited to a calculation of previous usage. Full conditions are on their website.

No. You are allowed to roam but there are limits set by your provider. This is whether the sim is bought in Paris Madrid or Timbuktu.

Edit; well not Timbuktu as they are not in the EU.

The ability of roaming anywhere in the EU was one of things that we were due to lose out on when we left. The main aim of the act was to ensure folk in border areas did not pick up signals from another country and charged accordingly.

No it wasnt actually. Most networks said they would retain roaming but many have subsequently brought in fair use policies. This is entirely in line with what happens in the EU. her is an extract of the EU regulation, this is the emerging one but pretty sure the existing which expires this June is the same.

What will happen with the ‘fair use' policies?

Operators will still be able to apply a ‘fair use' policy. The rules on the ‘fair use' policy remain the same. This means that if a person is traveling to another EU country periodically, then this person can use roaming. If a person moved to live in another EU country, then it is better to move to a local contract, as permanent roaming is no longer considered as ‘fair use'.

That appears to try to stop you buying a contract in Albania when living in France rather than roaming as UK motorhomers did.

That is what they consider to be fair usage - people going on holiday. What we used to get away with was mostly because UK operators let us. They could have still imposed fair usage limitations while we were EU members. There are long termers here from other EU countries who can't use data like we used to.

As I ve already said, we re getting away with Sky Mobile at present, but if this alters we will just buy a local sim card and be a bit more tolerant with wifi as we used to do before the roaming charges changed.
