SWMBO wants to take a small TV whilst in the UK, anyone use one, preferably one that doesn't need any screwing etc - also can I use a small normal TV rather than an expensive 12v type, thanks

Just fitted one of these to my new van.
no need to put it external as I just fixed it behind a cupboard at the front.
Picks up all channels.
It does need a 12v supply though

Any 230v/12v TV will be fine.
If the 230v power lead has a black box on it its most likely 12v.
You will need to source a plug for the TV to make up a 12v lead. .

We used to use an antiference silver sensor set top aerial in the caravan. You can polarise it vertically or horizontally, Ann had it as her main TV aerial for years when she lived in the flat, got all the channels as good as a roof aerial👍

The Avtex aerial is good if the TV ariel input produces 12V you won't need an additional power input for it, the Avtex aerial has an inbuilt booster

The Avtex STH3000 boosted antenna’s is designed specifically for use with digital televisions, it is light weight, compact and very easy to use. With it's unique flexible mounting system it can be installed indoors or outdoors in seconds.
The integrated 20db amplifier can be powered by the antenna power out function found on most set top boxes and all Avtex digital televisions. As standard all STH3000's are supplied with a 12/24 volt DC power inserter, prefect for caravans, motorhomes and truckers! Enjoy crystal clear digital reception with this complete antenna solution!
FEATURES

  • High gain 20dB TV aerial
  • Directional
  • Built-in low noise amplifier
  • 2 way power source (TV antenna power out or 12v/24v)
  • Flexible suction mount (similar to GPS windscreen mount) – no need to drill holes

  • Pole or wall mounting bracket also supplied
  • UV resistant housing
  • Water resistant

Avtex STH-3000 is one of the better ones IME.

All the Ballade/Supergain antennae, including the one mentioned above, are only horizontally polarised (being primarily intended as international marine antennas) so whilst they work quite well with a good horizontally polarised signal, they won't receive vertically polarised signals as transmitted by many UK terrestrial masts to avoid interference between adjacent transmitters.

If you buy a 230V only one, you can only run it when on electrical hookup, or using an inefficient and noisy inverter.

However, many smaller TVs have external mains power bricks which can be replaced by 12V power supply bricks (or in some cases connected directly to your 12V system). Finding out which are which in advance can be tricky, as external power bricks are normally considered a bit cheapie, so they won't advertise the fact that they use one.

Cello TVs are widely available at reasonable cost and often have 12V adapters included (not all of them, so check!) They're usually around £150 for 24inch and around £200 for 32 inch. Some have DVD players or satellite receivers embedded. Ferguson are another brand cheaper than the pricy Avtex stuff.

Whilst almost all TVs can be freestanding or mounted, it is a pain to have a freestanding one, as it has to be secured every time you move.

Forget the rest you just need one of these, about £10 on ebay.
Bought it on our recent trip to Newquay after we were very kindly lent one by the couple on the next pitch. We couldn't get a single channel with the amplified Avtex whip aerial, this thing sucked in 47 channels 😳.

Thinking it was a fluke or something I'm just trying it now at home (with the van in the garage) and it picks up every channel the house TV does, and that aerial is in the loft. Unbelievable for an unamplified non directional aerial 🤩

PS the antiference one I mentioned above was no better than the avtex.

+1 for the August Aerial. I have this in a cupboard as high up and as close to the wall as possible. My Avtex TV can send 12v to it which I have turned on. Works really well and no worse than two or three others I tried. I did buy one of those "highly rated" flat-panel with inline amplifier jobbies which was useless.

Is that why we had absolutely Zero/Zilch on ours at Topsham but its working a dream at Woolacombe.

That new TV we got is fantastic, I've connected it to the house WiFi and all the programmes on the house Humax box are available to watch in the van 🤩 useless for site but if Ann ever kicks me out I can watch her programmes 🤣
