So in recent days I’ve learned I’m best to pay for a pvn to receive Uk tv on laptop.. Which network would you go for to stream tv and how much data roughly does an hrs tv use?

An average film (1.5hrs) in SD Uses about 750mb and in HD about 1.5 gb. As you can see you will rip through your data at a great rate of knots!
In Portugal I use a Vodafone pt sim and was getting 30gb for €15 for 14 days or 60gb a month for €30

I saw that deal today from both Meo and Vodaphone. Which is best for streaming.?

I found Vodafone more reliable and better customer service when I had an issue but loads of people use both. You can stream from either and I almost had 4g along the whole of the algarve

We have not watched tv, but Nos is unlimited fair use, Meo is 2 gb a day both work out €1 a day @€15 for 15 days. :D
We found Meo the more reliable and the coverage better. (y) Bob.

I think you will find you can still get a NOS date sim only deal for 31 days or more at 1 euro a day unlimited date. This is for a mifi device. If you top it up before it runs out you can have it as long as you want. I used one last winter and with an app I could get uk tv and link my phone as well.

Another vote for NOS, I used one sim for 6 months last winter, €15 for 15 days unlimited, sims are available from Worten shops and possibly other phone shops, I think the the 30 day ones are only available from NOS shops.

Easy to top up online or buy a few sims.

I found NOS to be next to useless in our area, so had to go back to MEO

Personally, I use Link Removed and don't bother with my VPN, excellent service, bandwidth efficient and free

How far behind is TV Catch up from the normal aired version and does it show all Tv. I’m really only interested in I’m a celebrity when it starts next week so would be fab if I could watch it here.

@irnbru Can I please add an extra bit to your question to @pyro
I’ve just followed your link and it started up nicely. Is it possible to watch tv live on this as it seemed to be live when I looked at it or is it like Film On which allows you 2 mins then turns itself off until you subscribe. Also do you know if it will it work in Spain with a Movistar data card. Thanks

Despite the name, tvcatchup actually streams live, we rarely watch live tv, prefer to download from iplayer for which we need a VPN.

We do this for 2 reasons, firstly even with good strength connections streaming can occasionally be interrupted, secondly we can watch when we want not when the programmers see fit.

@irnbru do let us know how you get on, we are about 20 days from Portugal at our current speed and intending to stay till the end of February somewhere near Faro

That’s very interesting and useful but how come tvcatchup doesnt need a VPN yet itv and Bbc player does?

Next Q thinking ahead. If I also buy a vodaphone 15 days for 30Gig will it work in Spain and France too?

I don't know how tvcatchup works but I assume that some breaches of copyright are involved and will eventually be either closed down or become a pay to view site.
I am not sure about roaming with a Vodafone Portugal sim, since the rules changed earlier this year it may now be feasible.

I always have a couple of '3' 12Gb PAYG data sims in reserve for when we are in Spain and France, which works as if you are in the UK ( no VPN needed ), no problems streaming UK TV but obviously uses a lot of data which is not a great problem for us.

12Gb gives around 18 hours of downloaded TV in SD

Will you be staying at Olhao campsite or do you have a better one?

It's really just live TV, the name is a legacy from when they started when they used to provide all the recorded content as well. I believe they may be reintroducing recorded content with an online recorder

TVCatchup is actually fully legal, several broadcasters banded together to take them to court, and tvcatchup won the right to stream a fair number of channels on the internet. Been going since 2007

There are no subscription charges, no limitations, just free live TV. Basically if you can get the internet, then you can get tvcatchup.com

I had a feeling that it may be legal, I seem to remember that you are/were involved in the legal side of copyright and thought it strange that you recommended it, good to know that it is legal(y)

Yes, you're right, it was probably one of the most involved copyright cases to date in the UK, which tvcatchup largely won in the end, with the high court approving what they now offer.

From what I have been reliably told by the new team over there, the system now operates in much the same way as a Slingbox with remote individual tuners etc, so they will be adding more channels and recording facilities to the site in the next few months.

Gents! If your looking to get the best data sim card for use in Portugal, or anywhere else in the E.U. you cant go wrong with the Vodaphone 30 day rolling contract that gives 4G and up to 50GB for £30.00. Just cancel the contract after two months to get the full 3 months fair usage when in the E.U. You can confirm this if you want with the live chat option on the Vodafone website. Here is a link to their current data sim card offers.

That was the case until yesterday!

We’ve been using that for four monthe with no problems, including a week back in the UK in the middle.

However today it stopped working. Checking the messages....... something I’ve not done before on a mifi and it appears that they are imposing a 16gb roaming cap then charging. They kindly alow you to go £70 over the £30 before cutting off service (thanks for that guys!).

So effectively I’m now paying £30 for 16gb per month plus £70 per month if I forget the limit! Time to re asses and probably cancel. Currently switched to 3 mobile prepaid card

You have been restricted because of their fair usage policy.

I'm chatting directly to Vodafone on this matter and they have responded as follows:
Info: Thank you for choosing to chat with us. An agent will be with you shortly.
Info: You're now chatting with June.

June:

Hello, you're chatting with June your Vodafone online sales specialist.

Philip: Hi Jun, Hang on while I spell this out!
June:

Hi Philip!

Philip: I have just been informed by a member of our motorhome club who is currently in Portugal that she/he has just received notification that using data abroad has been restricted to 16GB per month. My understanding is if you purchase say 50GB for £30 a month on a rolling contract the fair play usage policy does not kick in until after 3 months. Can you clarify please.
Philip: I should have added that you can use all of the data you purchase when in a EU country
June:

Roam-free is intended for periodic travel. It isn’t meant for users roaming on a semi-permanent or permanent basis.

June:

We’ll send you a text requesting you moderate your usage in our Roam-free destinations if you use them for a total of 2 months or more during any 4-month period . If your usage in any of our Roam-free destinations continues to exceed this allowance after a 2-week period from which you first received this text, we may charge you for further use or bar your roaming services. We’ll always let you know before we do this.

Philip: Can you look at that again. I was told last week it's changed to three months
June:

Sure! Let me check it again.

Philip: Also, can you confirm if I purchase 50GB @ £30.00 per month on a rolling contract I can use all of the 50GB per month when in a EU Country up until your fair usage policy kicks in country
June:

Yes, that's right. You can use all 50GB data while in Europe zone until the fair usage policy kicks in.

Philip: Thank you. \Can you confirm it's 3 months and not two before the fair usage policy kicks in
June:

Thank you for your patience, Philip. I checked again and it is 2 months as per the terms and conditions.

Roam-free is intended for periodic travel and not for users roaming on a semi-permanent or permanent basis. We will send you a text requesting you moderate your usage of Services in our Roam-free zone if 50% or more of the days you have used our Services have occurred in our Roam-free zone within any 4 month rolling period. If your usage in our Roam-free zone continues to exceed 50% as described above over a 2-week period following our notification, we may charge you for further use or bar your roaming Services. We’ll always let you know before we do this

June:

Let me also send you the link to view terms and conditions.

June:

Please click here to view terms and conditions.

June:

You will find the fair usage policy at the last page.

Philip: OK ! It must have changed again as last week I was told 3 months by an advisor on here and again in one of your shops.

Why would you want to enter into a contract when you get the package mentioned at the start of thread.

We have now bought the Vodaphone sim and will start it off next weekend.

I’m so glad I asked this Q and the replies have saved me money not having to buy a VPN. I’m well chuffed :D2

The package at the start of the thread, if I have read it correctly, is for Portugal only. The Vodafone rolling 30 day contract covers the whole of the e.u. Cancelling the contract before the fair usage restriction kicks in, is simple.

And......Just to confirm some Vodafone staff are not up to speed with their products T.O.C.

Hello, you're chatting with Sophia your Vodafone online sales specialist.

Philip: Hello, Can you tell me how long I can use a data sim in Europe before your fair usage policy kicks in. I was in a shop last week and they said 3 months, is this correct ?
Sophia:

Yes upto 3 months you can use allowance

Philip: Thank you.

I was told by EE and 3 that the limit over seas is 12gb per month and so long as you stay under that all would probably be fine so i could keep using the sim until the end of the contract. I have a sim that gives me 20gb in the uk or 12gb overseas a month a well as Go Binge that lets me use Netflix, TVPlayer, lifetime,Deezer and Soundcloud infinitely, anytime without using up any date in the uk or over seas. I also got a Huawei 4G mobile unlocked Wi-fi device for an extra £10. The cost of this contract is £10 per month from 3.

Rather than start a new thread, just a quick Q .

Why can’t I pick up any local tv at all on my tv? Not a single channel found?

You need to check the arial and re tune the set I would say.

Done all that. Was thinking it was maybe like Feance where we don’t get any.

Will check the connections in morning if we should be getting tv then.
