Can I park overnight in Canterbury park & ride? wont get there until about 9pm, is this too late?
Used to park on the seafront many years ago but don't suppose thats allowed now!

Canterbury barrier closes at 20,30hrs unfortunately.
I believe you can still stay on Marine parade, but ain't certain.
Cheers. Nige

We parked on the seafront with no problems in December

NO NO NO they will book you for that now. It is a TRO backed ban on anything other than cars or bikes. You might get into Maison dieu carpark as that is now designated for bigger vans and buses. Canterbury is the best option or try and find a back road in Dover, but not recommended with some of the types around here now.

Personally I prefer to get to Dover late evening, cheap crossing the stay overnight, FREE, on the French side at Cite Europe..
Give it a try next time.. (y)
Saves all the faffing at Dover and no one moans at you in Calais.

B&Q at Whitfield used to allow motorhomes to stay overnight in their car park, it might be worth giving the manager a call and asking.
There is also a lay-by overlooking Dover Castle on the A258 and a coach park, same road, a bit further on, opposite Upper Road, I have seen motorhomes parked in both places overnight.
There used to be lots of foreign motorhomes parked next to the Dover Patrol monument on Granville Rd, St Margaret’s at Cliffe, I am not sure if this is still allowed but it’s a nice place to stop.
There is also free parking at Deal towards Walmer on Kingsdown Rd. We have parked there before and seen other vans staying overnight.

Longfield Farm, Singledge Lane, Whitfield, Dover CT15 5AA - on ukcampsite.co.uk if you check.

£10 for the night, just outside Dover off the A2 and very handy for the ferries. Peaceful very small CL site, down a country lane, but at the end of that lane where it joins the main road to the docks there is both a decent fish & chip shop and a Tesco, so good for stocking up.

No facilities other than a tap and somewhere to empty the loo - I *think* they have hookup but can't remember, we don't bother with it. Park up near the gate and no problem leaving early, it's what we do. For £10 much better than some grotty part of Dover!

The OP said arrival time of 9pm (or possibly later?). Not many CLs are happy with arrivals at that time of night, so that would need checking on booking. They are not always keen on early departures either, although I suppose all the ones near to Dover are used to that. Most pubs stop serving food by 9pm & having a meal is usually the point of stopping there.

There doesn't seem much point in going to a site when all that is needed is a parking space for a few hours. If you are going to be too late for Canterbury, I'm another to vote for trying to bring the ferry booking forward to the first one that has a check in after 9.30pm & go to Cite Europe instead.

Another vote for Cité Europe, two minutes from terminal other side and food available till 10 pm

We always stay at Hawthorn Farm ,Martin Mill,CT15 5LA. Nice site with cafe, ten minutes from port.

We've used marine parade in the past, although IIRC it was posted a while back that you could now only use one end of it, nearest the A20?, but crossing early gets my vote was well, Citē Europe and a nice early start on the right side of the pond.

We did once park outside the shops opposite the Marine when it was full, but we've only got a little un, no knock on the door from the rozzers but I spent half of an uncomfortable night awake waiting for it, never again.

AS I said. Marine Parade is not available unless you really want to get a ticket for it . THEY MADE A T.R.O. to stop it,on purpose and the wardens will ticket at night, The road Snargate Street that is alongside the A20 has no restriction I know of but might be filled when you get there.

I suspected that Marine Parade would have been "stopped" by now. Back in the early "naughties" There where mutterings amongst the property owners, according to reports.

We used a Pub site the last time (2008). The Royal Oak, @ Capel Le Fern. Dont know if they still allow, but Google shows Caravans behind it?. (

The Crown at Eythorne, just off the A2, allows MHs but does expect you to eat or drink in the bar so may not be suitable for the OP arriving late.

This... all day long.. we go Dover Dunkirk , 10 pm or 11.59pm, get off the boat and stop in the car park next to the terminal. Get up around 8am and crack on. Eat on the boat so no having to find food, or anywhere to park. If we hotel it , we stay other side as well.

I just overnighted at the Dover Tesco. It's 24-hour. Arrived 22:00, left 07:00. There was another motorhome there too.

Tesco Extra
White Cliffs Park, Honeywood Pkwy, Whitfield, Dover CT16 3PS

Another vote for going over on an evening ferry and stopping overnight ‘a la France’.

We used to overnight at a Britstop in Ashford before we realised the error of our ways!

Please see thread more parking restrictions! Yes you can stay on park and ride at Canterbury and there is a pub on the corner that serves food.
