Hi I'm a complete novice but do understand how the fridge operates but doesn't seem to get very cold when on gas and food has gone off any help gratefully received

Hi geoffndee Also on 12v it's not good I've noticed. I'll checkmake and model when we next stop

3-way fridges are, by definition, absorption type not compresssor type, so they can, at best cool to about 18 degrees below the ambient temperature. So, if you want cold beer in the South of Spain or France, you need a 12V compressor fridge. Having said that, I have a 3-way fridge that works well on 240V or gas and not as well on 12V. Get a fridge/freezer thermometer which has a thermocouple probe on a long wire so you can accurately measure the internal and external temperatures and see what you get on gas/240V/12V. Note that it's critical to operate an absorption fridge as level as possible as there's no pump to circulate the coolants. They don't work well if they aren't level.

Presumably it has never cooled satisfactorily.
I just use a cheap 'n cheerful Poundshop household thermometer. The temp doesn't change in the couple of secs it takes to open the fridge door to read it.
Gas is usually the most efficient.
It's illogical but they usually cool better when the temp control isn't turned to max cooling.
On 12v with the engine running the temp of an already cooled fridge will be maintained but 12v won't cool a fridge from scratch to any useful extent.
It may be that the thermal paste has dried and needs replacing. Many posts on how to do that if you use the 'Search' facility.

Cool the fridge before leaving I use blue blocks if I haven't. Freeze your milk it helps
My fridge will freeze food if I turn it ljw and its a 3 way
Sounds like the thermostat could be iffy.
