Hi,

I am doing all the prep work for installing the Orion XS-50 B2B in my Carthago. Fiat Ducato base, I would like to confirm which point the terminal end would be best mounted to ?
I have labelled them 1 through 4, as presuming it would be one of these ? Tried following a Youtube video on an install and it went through all the process of removing the battery, drilling a hole in the floor, routing the cable and connecting it to the B2B but did not show which bolt point to actually connect this end to !

Second query is that I have routed the cable easily from the garage through the double floor up to the area below the passenger seat base, but am stumped at present on how to route it those last few inches. Do I need to remove the seat base and all of the padded/insulated flooring and come in the same way as the existing cabling ? Or is it easier to just drill a hole in the floor of the battery box and do it that way ?

Happy Bank Holiday !
Cheers

Mark

Doesn’t really matter they are all on the + side 😊 don’t forget to protect it with a suitable fuse😊👍

I've just done my Compactline I connected to N0.3 but only because there was no other connection on it, it doesn't matter which one.
Your cable looks undersized, it's a long cable run in an e-line I used 25mm2 in my 6.7m Compactline.

Depends where his battery is and where he's mounting the B2B. Ours is in the outside locker behind hab door with the inverter so shortish run whereas yours is going full length to the garage?

I would definitely avoid number 4, That's the permanent connection to the alternator and starter motor. Bad things happen if that connection isn't good. Leave it alone.

Is that a vacant space for a fuse where your cable is resting, albeit with no bolts?
It's a Mega fuse slot, you can get a 60A Mega fuse in there. Made for it.

Hi, I bought everything as a kit from VanJunkies ( see photo ). The maximum length they had was 7m. I presumed, that being a campervan electrical design supplier that they would know what was suitable in the kit they put together ? Their advert shows it was 25mm cable.
This kit consists of:

Victron Orion XS Buckboost 50amp Non-Isolated Battery to Battery Charger (ORI121217040)
25mm Heavy Duty Flexible Battery Cable (2m of black as standard and variable red up to 7m depending on installation location)
2 x Victron Midi Fuse Holders
2 x Victron 100amp Midi Fuses
8 x 25mm mate Battery Lugs

PLEASE NOTE ONLY 2M OF NEGATIVE CABLE IS REQUIRED AS THE CHARGER CAN BE GROUNDED TO THE NEAREST GROUND (CHASSIS, BUSBAR ETC).

Yep to the garage where my bus bars are, don't have a locker there.

25mm2 cable is fine it looked smaller in the photo, 100 amp fuses are a bit high I used 80 amp.

How much cable length have you actually used for the positive run? 25mm² cable should be fine if the neg is a shortish run to the chassis, you might get a bit of voltage drop in that, 0.3v ish so possibly the feed to the XS will see 13.9v or so. It will output whatever is needed to maintain the settings you've input for the battery and I think you will still see well over 40amps out, as long as the XS is nice and close to the leisure batteries.

The spare mega fuse space in your fusebox would make for a neat connection there so you would need to buy one of those and a couple of nuts/bolts, but the rest of the kit looks fine. On mine Carthago actually ran the cable off the fusebox using a ring/lug, to a midi fuse holder (as you have got in the kit) which was mounted about 3-4inches from the fusebox on the vans bulkhead (S Plus so all under the bonnet), not as neat but quite acceptable.

Mine is a 7m cable run to the garage then connected to my bus bars which have a 4m 70mm2 cable to the batteries a mid-ships, Carthago electrics don't make it easy.

Should of got a 143 plenty of space🤣🤣

I am surprised the suppliers did not supply suitable crimp Pin connectors for 25mm cabling into the Orion XS, OP may have seen this useful video from The Off Grid Guys, if not its useful to all that haven't yet if they have a DC-DC upgrade planned for the future.

I found it impossible to get 25mm² into the XS, I used crimped pins, crimped with my hydraulic crimper but had to file about a mm off the pins to fit in the XS.

I think they are best with just cable from what I've seen posted by RogerIvy and nigelivy

After much testing and experimenting, checking for heat buildup etc I’m sold on pins.
Having said that you need to ensure:
1. You use a good quality pin
2. Crimp it correctly with the right crimper
3. Tighten the connector well

I had watched your video before buying the Orion, what I need to do is find an electrician with a crimping tool. Thanks for the video. I need to re-watch the VanBitz battery saver install video to remind me where to place that.

I was told to make sure the cable is well secured/supported close to the joint, so that any vibration or knocks do not get through to the pin and loosen the clamp bolt - should be fine on the XS with the plastic cover/clamp in place though
