It's not clear from the pictures how far apart the batteries are, or if the battery box lid is made of metal or something non-conducting. You may need to fit a fuse on both ends of the positive link wire if there's any possibility of the wire shorting to the bodywork or the negative wire.

The solar controller needs to be connected in the right sequence. Battery first, then solar panels. If you get that wrong the controller can think it's charging a 24V system, so can overcharge them. When you want to reconnect the batteries, disconnect the solar panels, reconnect the batteries, then reconnect the solar panels.

The batteries are about 1ft apart and same with the wiring

There are 20amp fuses already fitted to both pos ends

Ive fitted the wiring through the plastic lid on the plastic battery box fixed with a grommet

Both batteries have breather pipes venting to outside

The solar and batteries where already fitted

All I've done is change the batteries to EFB and add a second

That all sounds good then. What kind of battery was fitted before? If it was AGM or Gel you may need to adjust the charging profile on the solar controller, and possibly the mains charger.

The solar controller should return to 12V battery mode. If by any chance you get a voltage of 15V or more, it has flipped to to 24V mode, so you need to disconnect battery and panels, and reconnect in the right sequence.

Just normal lead acid battery but been reading up and went for the EFB as I didn't want to change the chargers or invest anymore as getting gaslow fitted next month ans this was the easiest and cheapest option to be able to be off grip for a bit longer

The extra battery should ideally be contained inside a battery box..
I had a 2012 apache 700 so know the layout and this was how it was installed by Autotrail for the additional battery (y)
Obviously the vent pipe going outside to remove any potential gases.
