Any suggestions for the best boost jump starter?

I’ve got a ducato & the Noco GBX45 & it isn’t always up for the job. I’ve got solar panels with a trickle charge - but I guess the cold weather & the lack of

Have had to call the breakdown services twice. Today they tested the battery & it came up as ‘needs charging’ (& doesn’t need replacing) but i keep the van in a secure compound a fair drive from where i live.

The GBX45 is rated for diesels up to 4L - so it should be more than capable.

What are you connecting it to when you try to boost? If it's the connectors in the engine bay are they clean and making good contact?

Have you tried direct to the battery terminals?

yes, connecting in the engine bay to positive & earth. The rac man said I was doing it right & suggested getting a more powerful booster

Unless the Noco is faulty then it should be more than powerful enough for your engine (I'm guessing no bigger than 2.2L?)

Assuming the Noco is OK then the only thing I can think of is a dirty or loose connection somewhere.

Might be worth checking the battery terminals if not already done. A loose connection could also be preventing your solar from charging effectively.

Can't think what else would be causing it. You could try a more powerful Noco but I'm not convinced it's going to be the answer as the GBX45 is comfortably above what you need already.

Anyone else got any suggestions as to what might be causing this? Could it be cables to the starter motor being loose / dirty? Earth strap issue?

^^ Yes, it's defintely worth checking the earth strap, a frequent cause of battery woes on Ducatos. Check for corrosion at each end, particularly at the chassis fixing, and also check its resistance when disconnected.

What age is your Ducato?

As others have said, the GBX45 should be more than capable (unless defective).
