A Battery-to-Battery charger—often referred to as a B2B charger—is a device used in motorhomes, to efficiently charge the leisure battery (or batteries) from the vehicle’s engine (starter) battery while driving. Unlike traditional split charge relays or voltage-sensitive relays (VSRs), a B2B charger is a smart device that takes the incoming voltage from the alternator and converts it into the optimal charging profile for your leisure battery setup.

Modern vehicles, particularly those with Euro 5 and Euro 6 engines, often come with smart alternators that vary the output voltage to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. These lower and inconsistent voltages can lead to undercharging of the leisure batteries when using older charging systems. A B2B charger solves this problem by boosting or reducing the voltage as necessary to match the charging requirements of your leisure battery—whether it’s AGM, gel, lithium, or standard lead-acid.

People choose B2B chargers because they provide faster, more complete, and safer charging. They are especially important for those who rely heavily on 12V power when off-grid, as they ensure the leisure battery bank is properly replenished during even short drives. Additionally, many B2B chargers come with multi-stage charging profiles (bulk, absorption, and float) that help prolong battery life and improve performance.

In essence, a B2B charger acts like a dedicated, intelligent charger that ensures your leisure batteries are charged efficiently and safely, regardless of what your vehicle’s alternator is doing. This makes them a popular upgrade for serious tourers and off-grid adventurers alike.
