Hey Forum, I am planning to install x2 lithium batteries into my Mk7 transit and will charge them from solar and B2B. This van does not have a smart alternator.

I will install x2 lithium batteries (not decided which ones yet).

I am considering the Renogy 50A DC-DC On-board Battery Charger with MPPT. as I also have solar.

Just looking for some advice on whether I am on the right tracks here or if there is something that I may not have considered?

Thanks!

Renogy 50A 12V DC to DC In Vehicle Battery Charger W/ MPPT Solar Lithium AGM GEL (New Version)
System Voltage : 12VDCBattery Voltage Range : 9-16VDC
Maximum Charging Current : 50A (25A Alternator /

If I have read the specs properly, it only provides 25A from the alternator? The other 25A is from solar?

Be careful with Renogy products. I had a 60amp dc to dc charger that was working well but then failed after 3 months. They were very difficult to get hold of. No phone number and only and internet chat box which was hit and miss. I had to provide various meter readings and information regarding my batteries and the set up. I knew it had failed as there was no output with the engine running. After 22 days of intermittent communication they have finally agreed to a refund although I haven’t got it yet. They are an awful company to deal with. I will be going back to
Sterling products who are the complete opposite.

I watched some Youtube reviews a while back and was not impressed with the well below 50a output that Renogy states it outputs and the failure rate of the units. Do a search on Youtube for Renogy 50A DC-DC On-board Battery Charger with MPPT problems, and then decide.

If you currently have a split charge relay this will need alteration. Without a smart alternator you could use voltage sensing, ignition activation or D+ to turn the B2B on. In my opinion the best is D+, I would not use voltage sensing or ignition activation.

If there is any solar input, that's what happens. If there is no solar input, then the alternator outputs the full 50A. At least one person on here has put in a switch to cut off the solar on cloudy days so that the full 50A is available. Otherwise it's 25A from the alternator and a couple of amps from the solar.
