hi, I’m looking at a new Motorhome and need to fit an awning. The dealer fits Fiamma but I’m interested in any experience anyone has with the Thulesystem, good or bad. They seem substantial but are more expensive. Any recommendations for getting one fitted.

I've had a couple of each. No problems with either. More important is how well it's fitted. Mounting method can be vehicle-dependant and it's worth researching the correct method in advance. Consider fitting the longest possible too.

you are lucky to be based fairly near to an excellent supplier / fitter and source of knowledge and opinion

call John Rose of Rose Awnings in Poole, we have just had our Omnistore awning replaced and bought a safari room at the same time

Another factor to consider

length.. do check where the support legs will be in relation to the windows, lockers and hab door.. , which is also important if you want to fit wall brackets for the feet.. also where the roof arms are in relation to the hab door and that the door doesn't foul it when opened..

whoever sized mine up fitted the longest, but both wall brackets are on locker doors.. one on the garage door and one on the gas locker door , making them almost useless. .. not very smart..

Regarding makes, Dometic / Thule are generally consider to be the better quality, and have metal gear cogs in the drive gear box rather than nylon which can strip..

You may also want to consider fitting an electric drive..

Being in the motorhome accessory business I can tell you the Thule is built stronger. The Fiammas now have plastiv hinge joints on the legs and are easily damaged.

Dometic awnings used to be Prostor used by many of the smaller PVC builders until around 2015 when they bought the Belgian manufacturer. If opting for Dometic, older stock of Prostor accessories such as sides, sun shades & rooms, additional LED lighting and weather kits are compatible.

Thanks to every one for their advice. I am now moving away from a new van after much advice. (Not sure why i considered it, would never buy a brand new car!). Looking at a (for me) new second hand so will see what it has. Thanks again
