Not long enough!
G'day
We've decided to get a drive-away awning for our Travel Van. We've seen all the ads and comments about "only used once" awnings but we definitely want one despite that. The question is, how high?
The van already has a Thule wind-out canopy so the "figure-of-eight" will slot in the back of the wind-out beam. This means the nominal height of the kador is a bit of a guess but, fully wound in, the slot is approx 245-250 cm from the ground so I think the kador height will be a bit less. We have self-levelling fitted so it might be considerably higher in some situations.
I'm tempted by the Cayman Classic Mk2 (it's so light - more payload for alcohol!) but it's max height is 290cm. I've been told that excess material in the cowl is a problem when it rains. On a level pitch that means we could have 40cms of excess - has this caused a problem for anyone?
Problem is, most other awnings don't have as much "uneven ground tolerance" (or are a lot heavier) which makes me equally nervous - don't want to find that it won't reach when we get level!

First things first you may not need a figure of 8 or kador strip. Some awnings come with 2 sizes of beading to fit in the slot. or you could add a P rail either bellow or above the wind out. Mine is below (and bolted to the Fiamma) and have to use a stool to feed the awning in. I didn't like the strain on the fiamma when winding it in/ out to lower for an easy feed in.
I use Outdoor rev awnings so have no comment on your chosen awning. Having too much material can cause agravation (SWMBO has modified ours (a wizz with the sewing machine)). At that height a midi may be more appropriate than the tallest.

Thanks. There is already a strip under the Thule cassette but this would mean the led strip would be outside the awning:unsure:. Also, at 5'6" I'd need more than a step ladder to reach it:giggle: The mid size will only give me about 10cms to play with when levelling. Looking at vans with levelling whist we were deciding whether to fit it, some were much higher than that off the ground so I'm a bit nervous of having so little latitude. But which is worse, too little or too much?

Thanks but at 20Kg+ it's too heavy for me - that's a serious reduction in alcohol carrying ability!
