That’s what I thought. On a daily basis I leave my manual box in 1st and handbrake on.

I was always told not to do that when I learnt to drive (way back in 1975 !!)
The reason being "if the engine started on its own the car could drive forwards without the driver"

To this day I've never see a car start "on its own" when parked,, locked and no driver !!

But I guess there's always a 1st time !!

It's probably more likely that the handbrake will fail and it'll roll away.

Saying that, I only leave it in gear when I'm on a hill.
