We have a 4.5 ton van and are planning a trip which will include getting to Slovenia in March. Having read plenty of threads regarding the problems of driving through Austria (Go Box and the bureaucracy of Austria) I wondered if it would be possible to drive non toll roads between Germany and Slovenia in March without the need for snow tyres? It seems we may fall into the category of 'bus' and therefore not require them after 15th March, but does anybody have experiences of driving non toll roads at that time of year across the Alps? Google maps will plot a non toll route from Salzburg to Villach but I'm unconvinced it isn't toll.
