Are you one of those weird campers who hates grass?

I am shortly opening a CL site and I fully intend to pickup all the grass cuttings judging by all the complaints. But I will be cross if you then complain about the smell from the rotting grass mountain that it will create.

I prefer a bit of Moroccan!
Dunno?. The Jamaican, is reckoned to be superior to the Marrakesh Express?. ( A shipmate told me this back in the 70`s, honest guv never inhaled.?), But then he`d been talking to the Tambourine man.

Grass is no longer an issue, it don`t grow I don`t mow. We have a "Mediterranean" garden, a throwback to when we used to spend many months in the USA. Gravel, paving and raised beds so SWMBO can still potter. The first time we came back, we had a tribe of pigmy's (is that racist?) living in the jungle that had been laughingly referred to as our Lawn.

Never use anything outside the van, dog gets it filthy whatever, and we do like to travel as clutter free as possible.

If Carol is still at Jim's, then I suggest anybody going should pack their wellies, paddles to row your Van's on and off site and a periscope, having said that it would be worth that, to be in her company.

Jim, you are welcome to a social distancing coffee (from a sanitised cup) tomorrow morning, whilst you inspect the condition of our grass pitch, when I lift the the awning matting. If it's not to your liking, I'll lift the lot. How does that sound? 🙂

Cheers,

Jock. 🙂
Don't do it Jim ... you don't know what he'll put in the coffee so that you just see loads and loads of green grass, pink elephants, fairies etc and think it's lovely as you sway to the sound of harps.

No need, as after their farewell coffee and cake, they'll be heading home within the hour. 😉

Cheers,

Jock. 🙂

I am becoming paranoid about grass pitches that have just been mown. I have been bogged down too many times so always try to pick somewhere that has hard standing pitches. Having said that, we are on a grass pitch this weekend so I just hope it doesn’t rain.

I like ourvan clean so not keen on fresh cut uncollected grass. Probably fine on a cl with no facilities but a campsite I think it should always be collected, nothing worse than a few hundred campers dragging cut grass all through the toilet block/showers etc. it's hard enough getting rid of long hairs from wet walls/floors without grass to contend with as well.

"Yes"............. So people say...:giggler:

If you run a pipe from the male urinal to the top of the compost bin you will end up with high grade compost and no smell

The other option is to get a Llama, or an Alpaca.
If you initially pen them in one small area they will continue to use that area as their midden.
They only eat the grass, and unlike sheep they wont eat the flowers and they wont crap everywhere.

If you have sheep, llamas will work with your dogs to protect the flock, they really dont like foxes.

Many years ago we stayed at a hotel with a large formal garden, they had a pet Alpaca called 'Lawnmower'. That's what it did!

We use a breathable groundsheet - it helps keep dirt out of the MH and is pleasant for walking on barefoot. Walking on grass would be fine but I always seem to find the stones you can't see :(
But the longest we stay anywhere is about 3 nights and we've never noticed any damage to the grass, we also don't have an awning.

I love the fact that people get defensive saying their groundsheet is "Breathable"... Grass not only needs to breath it also needs sunlight. I have seen some right messes after a so called "breathable" ground sheet has been lifted.

Not having a pop as I don't have a dog in this fight. I do know if I had spent considerable money laying a nice lawn, then many hours keeping it maintained I would be pretty peed if people put down mats on it no matter what terms were applied.

Personally I prefer hard standings, don't use awnings or tents and use the grass as somewhere to put my chair when I want to sit outside ;) Each to their own I suppose though.

Generally have avoided grass pitches as we had 5 ton tag axle and have seen the mess they can make on softish ground. Now have a 4.5 ton so will depend on conditions.

But do use a ground sheet (breathable) when on hardstanding if the weather is good and we live mostly outside, bit kinder on the bare feet and the dog appreciates it as well.

Have seen a few towed off pitch have no wish to see our van subjected to that abuse. Have to admit they were Germans on a French site!!!!

Learned our lesson many years ago tenting on Bodmin Moor, so wet the smell was like a silage pit. Had to keep moving. If on Grass we now lift the "Breathable" sheet alternatesides/days so the grass gets a bit of sunshine.

Grass is pants with a wheelchair, damned hard work. If it rains it sinks in. So better all round if it’s hard standing for us....with grass nearby for me and the dogs.

Love grass- but it depends on how it is cut. if the camp owner mows the lawn and does not collect the grass. yes we use a Moroccan mat as we don't want to tread that load of crap into the van.
Get an aerated ground sheet as they let the grass breath and are lighter in weight as full of holes

Have a Moroccan mat but, unless it's just been cut and not collected, never use it on grass, just a simple rubber mat (the type with big holes in it) then an absorbent mat just inside the door for damp feet/shoes etc. The mat is for hard dusty ground which helps to keep the dirt out of the van and is easier on the old tootsies.

Now just have to get the dog to wipe his feet when he jumps into the van rather than clean himself on our nice new upholstery! :banghead:

Our new CL is all grass, it is a large open field but on the plus side you never see muddy puddles and it drains really well. If any body wants some free grass cuttings let me know. Last years pile is a particular good vintage perhaps I should put it in the classifieds.

You are correct.

Wet stuff usually falls from the sky....... ;)
mostly in Wales?
