I was recently asked for advice on a cheap laptop and I was unfortunately not able to advise as I only buy top of the range branded ones...
However this just popped up on Slashdot a tech site I frequent.

A lot of these techies are in the know and really do hammer their gear. The Lenovo X220 appeared to get the most positive mentions. So I did a quick search on ebay and they are incredibly cheap for 4GB+ i5/i7 Laptops. Lots of the supplier give a 1 year warranty.
I am not personally recommending them because I haven't had one myself. But it does look like a good deal for a Windows laptop...
Search on ebay for Lenovo X220 there are loads listed. My guess is ex corporate laptops...
