Are campers weighed on French toll roads or classed by appearance?

I towed a caravan in France years ago with a heavy E class estate and big caravan. I always pressed the assistance button when the price seemed high because I was put into truck category, usually they put the price down. I guessed I was being weighed or was too long.

Now we have a camper van (VW Grand California) which has a max weight of 3.88kgs but when weighed loaded is 3.450kgs.

Should I be class 2??

As you are plated at over 3.5t you are definitely a class 3 although unlikely to be charged that rate

Never been weighed at any French toll booth. They just measure the height and count the axles. If you are lower than 3m and have less than 3 axles you will be classed as Class 2.

Never been charged anything other than Class 2. We are 4.5t plated weight and 3.2m high.

If you are over 3500 does the angles mort stickers not give the game away? And once they go over to ANPR will the fact you have sent them a copy of your V5 for the Crit air showing the weights not give the game away?

Technically class 3 because of your weight but probably be charged class 2. If you avoid the toll motorways you will see a lot more of the country. Tolls are for when you are going a long way and in a hurry.

Mainly a height thing. You can call them and say Bon jewer monsewer, Je suit classe deux, in your best dellboy accent they will reduce you to class 2 (or say on your bicyclette)
