I’ve long wanted to go to the fair ... my cousin is an artist and goes every year to photograph the horses then paints them up later ... has anyone been?

Where would be a good place to stay? ... we could only go for the weekend as I can’t get time off in term time.

Didn't think travellers wore painted hoses:ROFLMAO:

If you go make sure your possessions are safe,. It's a place I wouldn't take my van and leave it to look around.

I went years ago but not with a van, I don't think I would either. It will be very crowded and you would have to park some way out which I think would be a risk. If I were to go again, I would find somewhere to camp on the Settle-Carlisle rail route and go in by train.

It was bloody chaos when we mistakenly drove through Appleby while the fair was going on a few year back and was amazed we still had wheel on the car when got out the other side.

We haven't taken the van either but, we found the most interesting day was the friday of the weekend which starts in earnest on Saturday.
The horses are up & down to the river for washing & its quite a spectacle, be careful of your valuables & I certainly wouldn't leave or moho there & unattended.

I would not dream of going anywhere near with the van, the kids can nick the milk out of your tea.

Thanks all ... hoses are now horses :D2. Unfortunately the Friday’s just not possible for a good few years but I do like the idea of the train. Lateral thinking (y).

Most farms within a five mile radius of the town secure mobile machinery and don't leave the premises whilst the fair is on. Previous posts offer good advice.

I saw a documentary a few years ago. Locals dread it. Pubs and businesses shut up shop.

The villages on the route to the fair have portable toilets, water , bins etc for them to camp at or gather at ahead of the fair. But no Aires haha.

There is a good campsite not to far from Appleby that I have used it’s called the wild rose park,
But travelling into the fair I would suggest public transport,

At home would be a good start! I have been a couple of times as in the scrap business you get to know a lot of travelers, but it may not be for you! judging by your phrase ( term time)

It is an aquiered taste.

I thought Wild Rose was now static caravans only? Maybe wrong on that.

It used to be a regular weekend stop for us when we had a trailer tent 20-odd years ago.

I think they still take tourers. We used to take the caravan there, when my daughter was 3 or 4. She’s 20 now

@Steve and Denise

You may be right but being a teacher doesn’t necessarily equate to being Miss Jean Brodie :p. Although, thinking about it, she would probably have quite enjoyed the experience!

I’ve seen a lot of my cousin’s photos as she goes every year and we’ve always had horses so are atttracted to that aspect of it. But you could well be right .... we’ll never know if we don’t try.

Have to say, I’m tempted to go for the public transport option. Campsite in Kirkby Stephen fully booked that weekend so may end up booking ahead for next year.

i would rather bathe my man bits in immac as it would be safer and more comfortable:eek: than going anywhere near that 'fair' as said before its as secure and safe as well, erm, ok its not.......

Just as well as the last time we were there having a cool pint on a fairly hot day a Teenager on a Horse rode it into the Pub and caused absolute mayhem, we still finished our pints though:pray:

I had to work up that way drilling a water well never ever agane I had to pull of site and wate till thay had all gone before I Could go back and even at that ther are still a lot of them live round ther now had lods of stuff nicked

I would love to go, dotty about horses, but would never go with a vehicle of any kind anywhere near.
Park a loooonnnggg way away and bus or train in & out.

I suppose if you have trouble selling your van and fancy an insurance payout it could be ideal!!!
