Hello - has anyone driven to Santorini? We've been asked by friends to join them for a week in Santorini in May 24. One weeks B&B for £2700. Seems like and awful lot to me! We could tour in the van for a month for that, I reckon. So I wondered about making it a tour..... On another thread Nicolsong recomended 'Via Mare' in London. I have contacted them, and the 2024 schedules are not our until Dec 23, so I need to wait to see what is feasible. There is a campsite in Fira where said friends will be staying. So if anyone has any tips or experience of driving to Greek Islands and Santorini in particular I would welcome your comments/input please.

Santorini is very expensive. I would not take a van there, the ferry will charge you lots. (I have been there 17 times but always stay with the same family although their prices have gone up a lot!!)

I suspect there are restrictions about MHs on the island unless you are a resident. There are no known aires or campsites as far as I can find.

Two years ago we took our MH from Athens to Patmos. It is easy as the ferry is just a drive on/off like UK. There is no campsite on Patmos so we just wildcamped in parking near beaches. As we were the only MH on the island nobody came near us - anyway I know so many people and am well-known there that I never anticipated any problems. We are doing the same again on 15th Sept.

I wonder whether the ferry and campsite fees might be expensive for 1 week. I cannot comment on wildcamping there, as I have not been on the island for 40 years.

£2,700 sounds expensive even for Santorini. I assume it is in some luxurious complex. I am sure you could find something cheaper. Does that include flights and transfers?

If you cross the Adriatic and take a ferry in the Aegean the Aegean ferry trip attracts a 30% Adriatic discount.

We went to Santorini a few years ago, booked into lovely boutique style B&B hotel in Kamari with pool and gardens. We hired a small car for the week we were there, toured the whole island end to end, even watched the sun set in the south of the island joined by many others. (y)
No way would I like to take our 7.4mtr MH over there, didnt notice any campsites, even large public car parks to overnight.
The running morning pool joke after breakfast with another retired couple was comments on dinner the night before...How Much? If the answer was over £100EU, it was because we had fish, with a bottle of wine.o_O Remember this was arround May/June 2008/9

Many bars & clubs along the sea front were shut as it wasn't high August season when the coach loads of teenagers turn up to party and sit on the 4 poster beds on the beach.

OIA the picture postcard village is great to visit, take pictures but meals/drinks are very expensive as most tourist traps are these days.
Good Luck, have a great time if you do go to "The Love Island"

Would you tell me the name of where you stay please?

We've been to Santorini but left the van at the airport in Athens. It's a very small island for small vans.
So do you fly from Athens, or take the ferry? And where do you stay when you get there, please?

There is, surprisingly, I think, a campsite at Fira. (Or is it Firo?). Anyway, I have contacted them and they would accommodate our 6.4m van.

Yes, thank you. I did wonder if one weeks cost would be prohibitive. I’m not paying £2700 for 1weeks b&b tho! Maybe as someone has suggested, leaving the van in Athens might be a solution. That has already crossed my mind, but I wondered about parking. The airport is definitely a solution.

Thank you Les. Yes, my brother has told me how expensive it is. My cynic says if you’ve seen one Greek Island you’ve seen them all 🙄. It will be interesting to see if/how we can spend £2700 on a trip in the van to include Santorini. Or not as the case maybe.

Been to Thera/Santorini several times, but not in the last 20 years.
It has always been one of the more expensive islands, due to the stunning views from the rim.

As for taking a motorhome there, well you would be the only one on the island.
Unless things have changed in the last couple of decades, the roads are all bumpy single track designed for donkeys and tuktuk's. You can go end to end in an hour.
I dont remember anything bigger than a 20 seater bus, and those stuck to the few 'main' roads.

Frankly I'd leave the motorhome on the mainland or one of the larger islands and just get rooms for your visit.

Edit - Looking at Google street view, the roads are much as they were 20 years ago. Gravelled single track.
Looks like only one campsite on the island, and it looks like it only takes tents

Edit Edit
Looks like one motorhome in the campsite car park!

Was looking at this the other day as we have flown to Santorini for an holiday annd it’s a lovely place, with the hire car i drove all over the island.
Would be comfortable driving my 8.7m van as they have big buses going all over.
I did not see any vans on the island or any campsite so I don’t think they cater for campers.

Looks a wonderful place to be . You do have to feel for the locals though. Must be a nightmare for them?

I have emailed the campsite - they do take vans. However, due to the useful info on her (inc yours) looking like parking at Athens airport or somewhere else secure, getting the ferry as footies and renting locally looks like the best option.
