We're off next week for a run a speedy trip to San Sebastain. Setting off from Calais first stop will be Bordeaux. I waant to avoid anywhere near Paris so I'm thinking A16 along the coast then A28 down to Rouen, then carry on A28 to Le Mans before joining A10 south bound.

I stupidly got caught out last year near paris by almosting entering one of the low tunnels. I undersand that there are said low tunnel roads at Rouen - can anyone offer the best route around to avoid these? Also, any other tips for furter along the journey?

Thanks so much in advance.

Just follow A28/E402 over Pont Mathilde and then it might depend on whether you are doing tolls or not, we then go along the riverside industrial area but either way there are no low tunnels.

We need to avoid Rouen because we cant get critair stickers for either our old van or old car so either we go A29 over Pont Normandie or via Yvetot to the A13/ A28
But if we are joining A10 further north we’d be heading to Evreux Chartres A154 route and checking out if there’s dispensation for motorhomes on funfairs route through the LEZ!

If you apply in advance you can get up to 24 days pa exemption from the Rouen LEZ for each vehicle. Worth knowing.

If you do get it wrong and were to find yourself approaching a low tunnel in Rouen all you need to do is take the slip road and go over the top of the junction. ASFAIK they're all ones that allow light traffic to pass underneath intersections.

I still think you can route through Rouen by going through the big tunnel on the A28 going over the river and turning right along the D18E regardless of classification. We do'nt have Crit D'air and havent had a problem yet (Euro 3)

That certainly used top be the case Jon as the ZFE area had what was essentially a corridor that the main roads followed that was not included in the zone, they have changed the green zone map and there is now no such corridor, do I think you will have a problem? NO.

You can get exemptions for up to 12 times a yrs i think for the emission zones
Contact Flatpack chicken he has the details

we then go along the riverside industrial area
Which is inside the lez zone. That is the route I always use to & from Louviers.

I believe that is still the case BUT

you have to have a sticker to enter any LEZ area .even if the area is not in operation on that day or even if the sticker is not the correct classification.
If you do not have a sticker theoretically you cannot enter any lez even when not in operation.

I realise this but the chances are I wouldn't benefit from having the stickers and I would rather not share my details with them.

Tbc I don't set out to break any rules but this is a daft one even many of the French don't agree with.

Unless money is no object take the N10 just after Poitiers, the time difference is only 5-10 mins more but it's free. Dual carriageway 99% of the way now too. We use it every time we travel to, or from, Calais.
