A guy I bump into when I'm walking the dog told me that he frequently visits Ayamonte in Spain. He raved about it but from what I can see its close to the coast but on the river that borders Spain and Portugal. I can't see any sites or camper stops in the area. Anyone been there?

Yes we frequently visit from Camping Ria Formosa at Cabanas, train to Vila Real, ferry to Ayamonte.

There is a large aire on the seafront at Vila Real on the Portuguese side and a new but relatively expensive aire in Ayamonte, I will try and find a link.

Ayamonte is a nice Spanish town, not massively touristy and plenty of tapas bars etc, avoid the very sad small zoo, truly awful.

Personally I would stay on the Portuguese side of the river and use the ferry.

Plus one for staying on the big aire (rough ground, but perfectly OK, and has services) at Vila Real de San Antonio, on Portuguese side of the river and nipping across by ferry (or back over the bridge via scooter etc) if you want to visit Ayamonte.

We stayed at the new aire when it first opened. It was a bit expensive in comparison to the Portuguese aires, I think 13 euro. We were the only van there so had lots of space. It's right on the marina and run by the Andalucian Port Authorities who opened 4 new aires last year. The town is very nice, especially at night when all the day trippers have gone and there are few tourists around.

Stayed on the marina aire twice last winter and price includes use of the toilets and showers and laundry area which is normally for the boats. One of the office of the port has Scottish parents so speaks perfect English. I can confirm what has been said about the town and is a beautiful setting especially at sunset.

We are going to Vila Real tomorrow as my wife likes the town being right next to the aire , although not the prettiest of places it has all we need ( water and waste) and we will probable get the ferry over to Ayamonte, but lovely sticky buns to be had in Portugal.

yes -agree with matamoros, it can make a good day out on the bicycles,to take the "visitors" for a day trip to spain.
we have done this quite a few times now and ferry trip plus a day in ayamonte seems to please most of the folk who are there for just a few days.
if they ever get round to connecting the cycle track to castro marim,it will be excellent! and so much safer.

We parked up in the aire at Vila de real San Antonio and took the ferry over to Ayamonte. I think it was around 3 euros. It passed a few hours. San Antonio was one of my favourite stopovers. Well worth a visit.

We tried to find the Aire at Ayamonte using the sat nav and failed. The route wanted us to drive down a tiny road with cars parked all down one side. Is there an easier way?

You have to go through the entrance to the marina through a barrier. When we visited soon after it opened no one opened the barrier and we had to drive around and then walk to the security for him to raise the barrier but they do have a camera on the gate, I suspect the security guard had gone for a fag break.

I think it was€12.80 to get in, necessary to register ID of some kind, electricity and water extra, toilets locked at night but I think the security guard will open them.

Local youths hang out in a nearby shelter but were not a problem and went before midnight, early for Spain:)

No young folks second time we stopped as they have fenced off the seating area but before were really no trouble just young folks hanging out together talking
