Since 2019.
We’re heading off to Spain and Portugal soon, mainly touring but at some point we’d like to put our feet up and stay for a week or two on a campsite near the sea in some warm climes probably at the end of October/beginning of November. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good campsite in the Algarve or on the Costa de Luz suitable for two adults with a dog and should we book in advance or will be ok just to turn up?

Parque de Campismo Ria Formosa at Cabanas near Tavira. Close to the beach and lots of other places to walk dogs. Plenty of shops, bars and restaurants and the train station is handy if you want to explore further along the Algarve.

Do you need a campsite?

There are camperstop in many places on the Algarve which, although they don't have all the facilities a campsite offers, have enough to give a good experience (and you can put out your tables, chairs and awning out)

Just come from Rio Formosa.
Wouldnt reccomend it. Building work going on front of campsite, major construction, and theyve now just started work in the campsite, extending it I think. So lots of noise, lots of dust, lots of activity.

Would second Rio Formosa, stopped for 2 nights stayed 2 weeks. Perhaps check it out on the way past and if building works intrusive move on

We also use Camping Albufiera, as along as no rain predicted 🤞😁

We stopped at Camping Pinar San José, which was ok.

I've cut off my nose with regard to Formosa.
Prior to Covid they wouldn't allow Brits through the door unless one had booked through CCC.
Alright, they would but you were limited to a single pitch rather than a double which is the norm.
It finished up last time with four/five vans cramped and squeezed into five pitches when there was loads of space elsewhere on the site.
Since then we have used Tavira Motorhome Park which suits our purpose much better and with a better ambiance.

Thanks for the recommendations. Any thoughts on whether I should book in advance or just take pot luck?

With regard to Tavira I would suggest giving them a ring several days before you intend to arrive. (we rang 4 days in advance)
We made our way to Ayemonte where there is an Aire, just over the river from the border.

We left there and arrived at Tavira before 12noon as requested/demanded and the delightful young lady
had saved us (there were two of us) a pitch apiece.

We stayed at Rio Formosa a few years ago in January unfortunately we wouldn’t go again, didn’t like the idea of there is no accessible beach in the winter months. We found we needed to use the van most days to get out and about. The staff in the reception were not the most welcoming.

Before Covid, I rallied over Christmas and New Year with C&CC at Tourist Campo about a mile from the coast at Luz.
Good company, great site, (even taught you Portuguese at no extra cost) reasonably priced and temp in the high 20C's.
What more could anyone want??

Small village with the Cafe/Bar nearby, drink and good food at reasonable prices
