As per title, we need ideally (we can't get there until about 6pm anyhow) a Aire between Birmingham and Manchester to use the day before Christmas Eve to get up to family in the lakes.

Any suggestions on suitable stopover, we don't need services or water, and would prefer not to just use Lydd/Stafford services.

The reason being we want to minimise driving on one of the busiest days of year (Christmas Eve!) if at all possible.

The maps of "campra etc" aires seem to suggest a lot of their sites are shut in Deceber when I checked, hence why asking. Given it's likely a busy night I'd like to prebooki this week if possible, as I can't imagine we are only one moving that day.

Can’t recommend one but do recommend Search for Sites essential for us for U.K. planning 👍

put 30 mins on the journey and overnight in Lytham St Annes
We would but we couldn't get that far North before very late.

As is with the days itiniary between Brum and Manchester is abiout as far as we can (comfortably) make. I'd prefer to be North of Manchester myself, but it's a 4 hour drive to just get to the area we are going to.

I think I've found one on S4S that Park4night (which I was using had). So money well spent on another years S4S and a parkup picked up (free).

Thanks tonka, I think I found one on S4S, will PM for some more. Looks like quite a few junctions of interest in that area. Just didn't want to be parked up a services where we can't (legally) use the gas given the cold weather we may have next week.

Stretton Fox at Stretton. Great pub stop. No need to ring in advance. We stay about 4 times a year.

Another excellent pub stopover. Like gpat we also use this 3/4 times a year.

If you use the M6 toll road, you can overnight at the motorway services near Cannock - Norton Canes. Specially marked parking bays.
Pricey (£15) I know but I found it to be perfect for my needs.

£15 for the Toll, If I'm reading it right 24hours parking for a motorcaravan is £33 (their website), thats more expensive than a campsite.

Thanks for the suggestion though, but the bylaws of not being able to use gas (which I know most of us ignore) make a parkup a better option as there are zero restrictions on that on normal carparks.

I actually did think of these services myself but rules out given the other M6 services are cheaper up at Stafford/Lydd area if we end up in one cause the parkups are full (we'll pick a pub over it, as we'd spend less on Pub drinks than we would on the M6 toll route!).

Penkridge is a good stopover. small village atmosphere with a couple of cosy pubs if you a nice beer,.

Park gate leisure is an Campra aire but a little way out of the village.

Car park by the Bridge pub on main rd is a popular overnight stop but if your in a large van be careful on what day you park as there is a market opposite on Wednesday and Saturday, so it can get busy and cars can block your exit unless you leave early.

Monckton bar ( recreaction ctr) will allow vans for a contribution of £5 a night. Let them know and pay in bar or think there may be a honesty box on the wall. In the new year i am going to discuss about possible small meets there or for them to apply as a Campra aire. Funds go to the football club (charity). You can access the village via a roadway and an underpass at the railway station. There is a drain for Elsan use and fresh water tap at rear of building. Small bar above the main building.

Thanks tonka -> we may end up popping in there in the morning in any case for some gas assuming they are open on christmas eve if we run out as I suspect we will on canister one.

I'm trying to get off calor for refillables but can't do it before this trip and we'll 100% use at least one of our 6kg in full over the Christmas period given we offgrid for 5 nights.

It's not so easy to park here now as Lancashire council have prevented overnight parking for motorhomes on most of the promenade following a campaign by SOME residents!

Look at Joining Brit Stops all on line
and choices for a pub meal and free night stopover lists all over GB
really very good option and constantly adding new stopovers

Consider a Safefill bottle..
Same fitting as a propane calor bottle so an easy adaption. Less than half price to fill up.. (y)

If you get in the area and need any info just drop me a PM..

Fairhaven North parking at top end of Lake, South Coach Park St Annes, Lifeboat Parking and West Beach St Annes if you pay, Fairlawn Road still free and you can stay overnight at any of these locations. It was the table and chairs and awnings over the pavement lot that ruined it on the road but Blackpool banned parking on the Promenade 30 years ago as it looked like a shanty town ( or more so) in the mornings with the vans parked up, I expect Morecambe will go the same way in the not too distant future. You can overnight in the Central Coach Park near the Football ground in both towns so no shortage just directed parking, oh and not forgetting Fleetwood!

Will do, I had considered safefill, but they didn't look to fit in my lockers (stupid Bailey). We will aim to have a permanent fixture done in New year, but didn't have a week or weekend to get it done in December annoyingly. Hopefully end of this trip we are left with 1 empty and one near empty bottle so we're not wasting gas too ;). 2x11kg gaslow will however fit according to others on here so we'll upgrade to that as we are not short on weight (or axle) allowance.

I'm well aware how much we'll save next year, as others have said, it really depends how off-grid you go, as using on-grid campsites everyone would probbaly find calor cheaper (when you take into account the depreciation on a 10 year system). However as we prefer off-grid festivals (and thats why we have the van) it's noticable this year we've got through around 24kg of gas so far, making refillable a far more econmical option. We would also go out more in winter with refillables, as the high overnight cost of gas puts us off at moment. Christmas we have no option as we need the van for the family to have enough room to fit everyone!
