We are thinking of buying a Hymer MLT 580, 2023 model not with the 4x4 upgrade.

Has anybody had any experience with one. Good points, bad points?

Where is the Truma 6DE boiler situated and is the van well insulated for cold conditions? I think they have a double floor, but not sure about water and grey waste tanks sizes and if they are winterised.

Any thoughts much appreciated

Thanks
Chris

We have a 2022 Hymer Exsis 580.

Although there are many differences, ther are also some points in common.

The main one being the Hymer PUAL bodywork whiich is well insulated. We like thayout with the twin beds over the garage. It works well.

There were a handfull of Hymer issues which took a while to sort out, but no deal breakers.

The Truma heating in the Exsis is under the rear passenger seats.

Excellent. Thank you. I’m pleased that your Exsis is working out well for you.

We went to see a Hymer MLT 580 yesterday.

I have to say that it was one of the best vans that we have seen (especially the 2024 model).

However just as I was wondering if we could reach the price for it, we hit a major snag.

Luckily my wife asked to see how the third berth is made up from the front seats. Enlisting the help of the salesman, the manual and an hour of frustration, we had to reach the conclusion that the bed simply doesn’t work.

We need the capacity for a third berth occasionally so that was a big show stopper, which is a real shame as that MH is, in my opinion, fantastic. I can’t believe that Hymer have messed up that third berth design so badly, when everything else is so well thought through.

Back to the drawing board.

Depending on the size of the person you are planning to accommodate, I do remember seeing somewhere in the past reference to a Hymer Mercedes bed which which could be fitted across the front seats. A quick search has turned this up, but its not the actual one I'm referring to. It may be something to consider for occasional use if it fits and isn't too much of a faff .
I have the Hymer ML T570 which is almost identical to the one you mention. It is an excellent van.

The third bed is similar to ours. There were no instructions. When we eventually worked out how it’s made up, we found it to be far too small and uncomfortable (it’s not flat) for an adult or older teenager. Our son spent one night on it (as we had no choice during Covid) but I wouldn’t subject him to it again.

IMO it’s pretty useless.

Thanks for this info and finding that video. I don’t think that solution will work for us, and it’s another £1k or so.

We so want the MLT 580 to work for us as it is so good, but that bed is a fiasco!

The 2024 model is outside our price range, but if the third berth had worked, we would have raided every piggy bank to go for it.

Maybe trying to get it flat was what was causing the issue yesterday, but there’s no way that it’s a viable solution. A massive shame.

Interesting.

When we bought our Hymer Exsis 580, the salesman told us that a 5th bed could be made up from the bits of the seats around the table and also using the front passenger seat turned around.
A 5th bed bed because the Exsis-i has a big drop down double for beds 3 and 4.

We didn't follow it up because we did not think we would ever want 4 people let alone 5.

Could it be done if you got some cushions made up to make it level? It could well be long enough if you have the passenger seat as far forward as it will go (or even turned through 90 degrees).

We tried with the passenger seat facing the rear of the van, but the table kept hitting the front of the passenger seat, so was either going to damage the table, the passenger seat, or both. The latest driver and passenger seats have a thigh extension, which may be causing this issue, even when fully retracted.

The salesman tried a different approach yesterday. He had the drivers and passenger seats facing each other but there was a space between one of the seats and the table that could not be filled.

He also contacted Hymer about it, but they were no help at all.

That bed just doesn't work, or if it does, it will be such a hassle to make up and won’t be big enough or comfortable enough anyway, as StillGoing mentioned.

I’m so glad that my wife had insisted on testing that bed, because we were very close to buying the van. Lesson learnt!!

Hi CRD

We're another owner of a MLT 570 which were delighted with.

However although we have the cushions for the 3rd "bed" we've never used them.

I've had a search and Practical Motorhome Magazine ran an article back in 2015 (note the 2015 price!!), which included the following photo which might help you....

We have a 2018 Mlt 570
It's an excellent vehicle for two people.

That 3rd 'bed' is really just an occasional sleeping area for a child.
To be fair to Hymer, they describe the MLT series as '2-3 berth' which is not the same as '3 berth'

As pointed out above, you may be better off with the foam across the front seats, but again only suitable for a child.

The only way you could really sleep 3 adults is by using the rear single beds with the double bed infill, which then makes the bed into a king size bed (2x2m).
The two on the side sleep head to the rear, the 3rd person in the middle can easily fit by sleeping head to the front.

Just noticed this, it was posted by another Funster (MisterB) in relation to another post.
May be of interest re alternative beds....It states guaranteed for weights up to 70 kgs, and depending on height of child, up to age 14yrs.

Thanks, Wizz It looks like a very innovative product.

As much as we loved the Hymer MLT 580, we couldn’t go for it because of that additional bed and decided on an Adria Matrix with a drop down double bed instead.

Glad you're sorted now. Hope you have many happy times with it .
