Were off to Portugal shortly for 7 weeks, and wondered this trip if we would bother with trying to view UK TV. Anybody got much experience with VPN’s and are they successful in enabling you to watch BBC etc whilst in Europe.

i use a VPN for streaming and it seems to stop the ISP's slowing you down deliberately and reduce even stop buffering.

but

i think you will need a lot of "internet data" to watch tv over the tinternet

If you use a UK based sim there is no need for a VPN, TV uses around 800Mb/hour so need a lot of data.

We are currently in Portugal and successfully watch BBC, ITV etc using NordVPN, it’s a paid service but worth it

i use NordVPN. seems a good service so far,,,

what are you using for tinternet, satellite? someones wifi? or mobile network? please just interested as to date i have only used satellite tv not via tinternet.

Please can you tell me what a vpn is, we use an ice crypt box

I use a mix of Vodafone and NOS data sims in my mifi and campsite wifi

Another happy NordVPN customer here...
Although I can't vouch for its efficacy in spoofing location as to being in the UK but it certainly can spoof me to appear as if I'm not in the UK.

Very good, I’ve used it all over Europe for a couple of years now

VPN express is good - you do have to pay for it - we use it in Europe and very fast - watched the Rugby this last weekend no problem

also .... a VPN cuts your network speed down
Technically that is true but as ISP's can't do any traffic shaping on encrypted traffic it can actually speed things up. If you want a good speed I'd suggest using a payed for VPN not a free one. I use IPVanish and have been happy with that for a couple of years. I also run OpenVpn (free opensource software) on a home server which only gives me access to a UK IPaddress but is a but fiddly to set-up. With IPVanish you can pick any country as the exit point.

Pure VPN is a paid service and has worked very well for us..................but they don't change their addresses often enough and I think the BBC has identified and blocked their UK servers. Well they certainly know when we are abroad.
But as posted, if you use a UK sim card you are now allowed to watch BBC abroad but not download...................don't know why they made that change but suits us on 3

If you stream through a provider like MOBDRO then no vpn is needed for live tv.

If in Portugal, NOS do unlimited mobile broadband for €1 per day, so €30 per month, payg no contract, all 4G and I get around 18mps download speed, you may need to buy their mifi, not sure if it’s available sim only, but only €58. Worth it for good unlimited internet.

I can still download on iplayer in Europe using Vodafone UK and 3 sims, not possible on ITV but that has always been the case.

Thought that you were using a Vodafone UK contract?

I have used NOS in previous years with different VPN's, where I am in Tavira the signal is not brilliant on any of the providers but good enough to stream TV, just!

Currently have both! Can’t reduce my Vodafone contract till June, but bought a NOS mifi anyway to have the unlimited deal. Very good speed here at Pera, and haven’t needed a vpn for anything either on Vodafone or NOS. I use Mobdro for any live tv ( sports etc) and Ororo (small subscription) for films and box sets, 100% reliable.

VPN = Virtual Private Network
It's used to hide your identity, your location and your traffic from prying eyes.
Except of course from the eyes if the VPN. I seem to remember there was a lot of security issues around the Onovo VPN app a year or two ago which is why I stopped using it. If all your traffic went through them they could see what you were doing and it was in thier T&C. I think I might be wary of a VPN for general use but for just tv it might be fine as long as you have the ability to tun it off after.

Obviously one has to do one's research and to ascertain who keeps logs & who doesn't.
But it does depend on why you want to use a VPN.
If you really want to be "secret" then you have to encrypt your traffic as well as using a VPN.
NordVPN says no logs, is based in Panama out of reach of the UK/USA authorities - plus they also offer a Double VPN [routing your traffic through two servers] and a Onion over VPN for the really paranoid. But they obviously come with a speed penalty
Ultimately it comes down to trust, cost and convenience.
I want a VPN to disguise what I'm downloading from my IP and to spoof my location & NordVPN fits the bill at a very reasonable cost.

I used to have a paid for VPN (Box PN) and a free one (Turbo VPN).

BBC got wise to both of them.

Cancelled paid one.

Fortunately there is more than one to skin a cat...
