Another racer some of us older ones will remember Phil Read dies at 83

yes a very good rider in his day, RIP Phil Read

Saw him many times in what to my mind was the golden era of motorcycle racing.
Also BSB rider Chrissy Rouse died yesterday after an accident at Donnington on Sunday.

Saw him at the Race of the Year at Mallory Park early seventies riding the M V Agusta 4, sounded really well alongside the screaming
2 strokes.

A good rider but not well liked by some.
43 years ago after coming over for a moan at me in the paddock at Snetterton he left his helmet in my van. I imagine he'd either forgotten where he left it or had more than enough of the argument so wasn't keen to come back for it.
Ten years ago, knowing that I would be judging with him at a classic bike show at Ardingly I took the helmet along and got him to sign it. He was getting a bit long in the tooth then and I didn't remind him how I came by it.

Can't remember much else but as a kid in the 50's we went to watch speedway at Rye in Hertfordshire, which still appears to be a racetrack. Looking for a vantage point we wondered why nobody was standing near the rails on the corner, we soon found out.
Watched the off and as the front runners rounded the bend we got showered with gravel. We moved before they came round again! :ROFLMAO:

RIP Phil Read.

A true biker and gentleman, RIP Phil Read

Met him at a bike meet in Loomies some years ago. Sat at the same table and chatted. I thought a normal ok sort of guy.
R.I.P.

Met him once a few years back at the Motorfest weekend in Ormskirk.
Nice guy - great rider.

Yes I remember him the same era as the late Bill Ivy at Mallory park

I did a lot of work for Phil after he packed in full time racing. He was hoping to import ultralight bi plane aircraft with Rotax engines. Our little job was to make the engine cowlings, tailplane and aft wing shapes as well as wheel covers all different so they looked like different World War 1 fighters. These took off at 20 mph, so you could literally wheel them out of the hangar in a stiff breeze (Redhill Areodrome) and take off like a helicopter  . They had BMX wheels, bengee cord suspension and tea trolley castors as a tailwheel.
He could get a bit impatient, as we were doing it part time. He was renting space in the hangar for the company I worked for as a draughtsman. Nothing much came of it, he was less than diplomatic with the Civil Aviation Authority Inspectors, which was struggling with the preparation of the ultralight regulations.
His house was in Reigate and had the biggest lounge area I had seen at the time. Racing trophies everywhere including one being used as a bog roll holder in the loo.
All round nice bloke, but I can't remember getting paid, not that I asked.....

I remember he used to have a motorcycle dealers where I lived in Hersham. Used to love going in there to look at the replicas he had on sale
