So we dropped the MH back with the dealer today after finding the oyster satellite probably faulty so they are going to have a look at it.
My question is, when it’s hopefully returned working, what do we attach it to, to get satellite tv on our telly
What do you do?
Cheers

Any sat decoder. Sky box, cheapo chines box etc. (Assuming the system has a sat finder already)

Sky would be good, does anyone use their home sky account in MH?
If so, how do you do that?

The new Q boxes can’t be used, but if you have an ordinary Sky box, we used to just take the one from the house.

Just take your sky box from home with you !

Been looking around at 12 v tv with satellite built in, what do they generally pick up ?
I’ve got a 240 tv which needs the generator or hook up, what would be your best option, bin it and get 12v tv or get an invertor on the solar as it could be used for much more.
If we have the choice we will pretty much always go for a ehu on site but no it won’t always be possible
And this is all based on hope they can fix the satellite or an invertor is the way to go
What invertor do you use/ recommend to work from solar
My head hurts ?

A small 150w inverter will work your tv and sky box easily ?

If you buy a TV with an inbuilt decoder you don't get the EPG (electronic programme guide).....only what programme is on next. The upside is it takes less power than a TV + sky box.

Check out Cello Smart Traveller
I seen these on amazon but not sure the quality is great, viewing angle and sound seem to be an issue but thanks for the share

This is where my head begins to hurt, been looking at invertor and the more I look the more complex it becomes. Seems a pure sine is the best so we can charge laptops etc and some need to go on van battery, some need a mobile solar panel, some seem to be hard wired, which seems best (I think) so what one do we get, or is it best to talk to dealer and get one installed ( is it a difficult job)
I,ll be glad when this is all sorted haha

Buy and install into your Motorhome a second hand fleabay sky box of a similar type to what you have at home, ours is a Sky HD. Then when you go away just take the card from home and put it into the installed box and link the card to it with this ........................

www.sky.com/quickfix

You will need the card number and the version and serial number of the box. Upon return home just take the card out, reinstall at home and re-link it back. Done once its easy peasy and saves faffing around with boxes..

You could look out for an old 'pace' sky box. They are 12v. I dont know whether you can use a sky card in them (they do take a sky card as they were one of the first generations of sky box) i am pretty sure they arent compatible with the new sky setup.

You could buy a cheap 12v box off ebay for less tgan £15. It will only allow you watch free to air BUT mine also allows me to tune into non uk satellite programmes on different satellites so long as its in range/footprint of course

Just had a look, I have sky Q 1tb, do you know what type of box is compatible, or anyone have the same?
Cheers

The Avtex has EPG

Im.not so sure that sky q is as 'versatile' as previous sky versions/formats

Sky+ HD as Sky Q needs a different LNB fitted to sat dish
I used a modified sine wave for years however on the new van I fitted a 1000w pure sine wave.
The Maplins 150w works fine and have had no problems with telly.??

For £180 it’s great value. Certainly when compared to Avtex Pro series.

The LNB was £90, + £80 for fitting although probably not too hard a DIY job if you’re handy?

Sky Q needs a different LNB, but Sky+ HD will run on a normal type 2 channel LNB. If you are using an Oyster satellite dish then they can be a bit particular in what LNB is used. Basically it needs a quality fast one, not an £5 ebay one, because the LNB has to spot and report back what it sees, before the dish goes past and misses it. :gum:

I was given some really helpful advice on this thread (which is about a microwave, but comes to same thing)

My advice would be to phone up VanBitz, tell them what you want your invertor to do and let them get on with it. They were the least patronising, most knowledgable and had the most 'can do' attitude of all the people I phoned. I haven’t had my kit fitted yet, but they seem very well regarded generally.

Again, thanks for all your advice
Popped in to dealers today so while it’s in getting the satellite looked at we are going to get a 1000 inverter fitted to the battery which should be enough for a bit of telly when off grid. Not sure we will use it much but it will come in handy.
We also have a power bank to charge iPad and iPhones etc, this is solar too so once we charge it, it should help keep us going
There’s a lot to learn on this Motorhome journey so I’m glad I like it here ?

If I were to change to Q I would have Oyster Tech sort the LNB for me as they know their stuff, but no intentions of changing anytime soon.?
