Hi everyone. Since I have already posted seeking your collective wisdom I thought I would post an introduction as it would be somewhat rude not to.

Anyways, my wife and I have been discussing retiring to Spain in a few years and one of her stipulations was that we would need a motorhome for coming back to the UK for transporting us 2 and our dog from Spain to our home and family in the North East of Scotland.

As someone that grew up hating caravans and the weekend trips that my parents made us do (bored and cold are my recollections) then the idea of having a caravan with wheels didn't really appeal. So she eventually convinced me to rent one for a few days and see how I found it. So I did - hired an Elddis 155 for four nights and for technical reasons ended up with a Swift Edge 476 for the trip. To cut a long story short - wow what a difference 40 years makes. I was amazed at the motorhome and the equipment levels. Despite some awful weather, inside we stayed warm (although clothes drying was a challange). The single track roads that we took to the West Coast in Scotland caused some me some tension but on the main roads, there were no real issues. Our dog wasn't to keen with all the racket from the back and my wife ended up in one of the back seats with the dog on her lap but I am sure with the correct packing etc. then we could reduce this to a level she found acceptable.

So now I have convinced myself that the motorhome part is no longer an issue to the retirement and I am looking to start the process of buying a motorhome and using it in the UK until we retire and then setting off for Spain.

That's it about how I came to be here, any hints, tips or warnings gratefully received.

Hello and welcome - you've come to the right place!

Hints and tips? Shame the Motorhome show at the NEC has just been but my best advice is to look at as many of them as you can to see what sorts of layout options there are and what's going to work best for you.

I'd also ask lots of questions on here about the stuff you can't see such as insurance, weight limits, pet insurance / other travel requirements, rules on how long you can stay where and how you need to navigate that (assuming you don't have an EU passport), breakdown cover and so on.

Warnings? Don't, whatever you do, ask any questions about toilets on here...

I would use the motor to tour Spain to find locations for your eventual permanent move there , unless you already know where you would like to live in Spain ,
Sounds very exciting good luck ,

As per my response to your question on AT Delaware and UK dealers.

The reason we got our initial caravan and then motorhome was impending retiral and the dug!:whistle2:

Have a look in the resources section, there is an excellent motorhome buyers guide in there that will give you lots of pointers and things you hadn't even thought of.

:hiya2: w2f You need to join to get the best out of the club. it only cost £20, it will be the best £20 you ever spend.

IF you are going to be retiring full time in Spain, buy a Spanish one because, IF I'm correct, after a shortish time, you won't be able to use the UK registered one but seek up to date advice! 🤔

As you plan on living in Spain I would suggest buying a motorhome there to save all the palaver of getting a UK van reregistered in Spain......or not if they won't accept it.
A couple of hoops to jump through with registering a UK van.....Headlamps will need changing EU regs and the hab door must be on the right hand side

We'll maybe do that but in the meantime I want to get all the "experiences" out of the way. I don't kid myself that I will only end up with one of these. Knowing my OH, there will be something wrong with whatever we buy that can only be put right by changing the MH!

If retiring to Spain would you be better buying once in Spain to save having to re-register the motorhome and other assorted paperwork?

Sorry pappajohn and l'hobo said the same thing posts ago.

Anyway
