Another big problem in Spain

Major landslide on the AP66.

That's potentially going to be serious, because this week temperatures are dropping and the alternative road (through Pajares mountain pass) could be blocked by snow or at least suffer from the bad weather, so road connection between La Meseta and Asturias could be totally disrupted.
Let's hope it won't be that bad.

The Civil Guard has concluded the evacuation work of 161 vehicles that remained blocked on the AP-66 highway, at kilometer 76, in the direction of León. The incident, caused by a large landslide, occurred around 10:15 am and forced to completely cut this road, the main connection between Asturias and the Plateau. The highway remains closed in both directions while the damage is assessed and the land is secured.

Until 12:30 p.m., 145 passenger cars, 14 trucks and two buses remained blocked in the Asturian section of the AP-66, according to the Civil Guard. Thanks to the rapid intervention of the agents, all the people affected, including bus passengers, have already been evacuated.

Despite the magnitude of the landslide, which affected the four lanes in both directions, the Armed Institute has indicated that there are no indications that any vehicle has been trapped under the rubble. "It seems that it is the good news that there are no people buried, but all this with some prevention we are saying, but, in principle, it seems that it is so," commented the Government delegate in Asturias, Adriana Lastra.

To completely rule out the possibility of trapped victims, the Civil Guard has displaced a team from the Mieres Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (Greim) to the area, accompanied by a search dog specialized in locating missing persons in large areas. The agents have also had the support of several Asturias Firefighters, which are using drones and thermal cameras to inspect the affected area.

The landslide occurred near the Entrerregueras rest area, fourteen kilometers from Pola de Lena, and has generated a total traffic cut on the AP-66. This highway is a fundamental road, with a daily flow of about 6,000 vehicles, including 1,200 trucks, which has led to a large operation to manage the situation. At the moment, traffic is being diverted to the N-630 national road, which crosses the port of Pajares, with the collaboration of Civil Guard members at the detour points of La Magdalena and Lena.

Puente describes the event as a "Serious detachment"

Óscar Puente, Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, has reported through his account on the social network X (formerly Twitter) about the event, describing it as a "serious detachment." According to the minister, it is still unknown whether there is personal damage, and the authorities continue to work in the area with means such as thermal cameras and tracking dogs to ensure that there are no people trapped. Puente added that, once the security inspections are completed, the return of the road can be planned.

The incident has caused great concern, since the AP-66 is a vital artery for the connection between the north and center of Spain, both for the transit of people and for the transport of goods. The rapid mobilization of resources and coordination between different security and rescue forces have been essential to guarantee the safety of those affected and mitigate the impact on traffic.

It is expected that in the next few hours the authorities will offer an update on the state of the road and the work for its possible reopening. Meanwhile, agents and teams deployed in the area will continue to supervise the affected area and coordinate traffic diversions to minimize inconvenience to users.
