From the 24th February you will no longer be able to download your books from Amazon.

I am downloading all my books now and will consider not buying ebooks from Amazon on the future.

If they don't allow you to backup/own the book... They can remove the book or update it at any time without your permission.

I download my books, convert the format via Calibre and upload to my Kindle for reading.

I guess the error on Amazon's part is use the word "buy" in relation to Kindle Content

I used to do that. But got lazy. Just downloading my 500+ books now

So does Calibre let you remove the encryption/DRM protection for downloaded aws3 files for purchased books - and thereby convert into some other format?

Edit : I thought you were only buying a licence to use, not owning, the books.
Hence the lower prices?

If you have watched all of it - sorry I am getting a bit lazy now as he was going on a bit…..
I get that you will still be able to download to your Kindle but not to your laptop or other storage device, but I am not sure if will still be able to download to the Kindle app on ipad?

This is the plugin I am now using.

Yes that's how I understood it.

They are, however, still advertising the Kindle app on the main Amazon UK website and giving updates on the app and there is no mention of it stopping.

I listened to that video and he says you'll still be allowed to download them - but only to a kindle and not a PC.
26th of Feb is the cut off date.

And therein is the problem.
Should you decide in the future to close your Amazon account, you lose all the books you have "bought".

Yes indeed.

Sorry, your answer not clear. I will still be able to use Kindle app on ipad or not ?
I would guess yes you could still use the Kindle app. It is specifically the download option within the Amazon website that is going as I understand it.

The Kindle app is effectively a Kindle.

The azw3 file is downloaded and immediately converted to kfx format. This kfx format is a format I have not been able to convert back to a pdf, or any other format yet.

You've maybe seen this, Carl. A bit of explanation / background to the KFX format and the issues it gives.

I avoid KFX like the plague!

This tells you how to remove DRM from downloaded Kindle books. I've spent this morning downloading and de-DRMing my 60+ Kindle books "purchased" from Amazon. You don't have to remove DRM immediately but you DO have to download them from Amazon before 26th February.

Absolutely correct. The purchaser licences access to a digital verion of the book, not a physical copy

The Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 defines the legal position and made me a good living, this section may be of particular interest.

I closed my Amazon account a couple of weeks back so have no access anyway 😉
Can't say I miss it so far. And the £300/year saved from subscriptions will find better use elsewhere rather than providing funds for Bezos' dodgy political affiliations.

A bit of a misleading title, it will not make any difference to me as I only use a Kindle anyway and don’t wish to keep them anywhere just because I’ve bought it. Not that I buy many anyhow and if I wanted to show off a book collection I would buy the real thing and have some nice shelves to put them on for display.

I have now managed to transfer .kfx files directly from my kindle to calibre. So future book purchases won't be tied in even if I move to say the "reMarkable 2" I can transfer them across.
