I'm a newbie
Can I purchase a data SIM, put it in my dual sim phone..... turn my phone into a hotspot, and then use my Amazon stick in our tele?

I'm pretty clueless with technology, but did have a mobile WiFi unit a few years ago, and I wondered if I could use my phone rather than buying a separate unit?
Many thanks in advance.

Can't see any reason why not. Your Fire stick just needs to see a wifi network - ours works fine throughout the UK & EU from our Tesco Mobile SIM in a Huawei router

Yes. Just set your phone to use data from the relevant sim. If it's an android phone go to settings,-connections- sim manager. And select the data sim for data usage.

We use our phones to run a firestick when away here. We're going to Spain next year so hope it will work with a VPN as well.

My sim works ok in spain for UK stuff as it is registered in the UK, but of course best to have the roaming included in the data pan

We're going for 3 months and the "fair" usage will get us after 2 months. We are going to get local sims, so will need a VPN for English TV. Also we may be able to use the site WiFi.

We are in Portugal using a Tiekom (Spanish) sim E46 per month in a Huawei mi fi, Express VPN watching ITV X BBC ETC via a firestick. 200 gb a month in rest of EU and UK, 400 gb in Spain can park it for E4 a month.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I can’t get BBC on my fire stick?

You need a VPN like ExpressVPN (others available). You install it, then pick which apps use it, make sure bbc iplayer, itv x , channel 4 etc use it.

I have a fire stick and hotspot y mobile phone with ID mobile unlimited £18 per month . And have used it to stream most evenings in our last three Euro trips . Someone told me you can also download apps to the firestick to allow you to watch uk tv live . Sorry , have to go emerdale is on :-)

As others have said we use our phones to hotspot to the Firestick. Our contract is with Tesco who allow you to use your full data allowance and even top it up with no additional cost. We also use a VPN so that we can watch UK television programs.

Why do you use a VPN ? Surely that’s only when connected to an overseas wifi network ? I never use a vpn and bbc player , itv x , channel 4 all work

Really? Yes I only use the VPN abroad, when I I’m too far away for the satellite to get reception. I didn’t realise you can get BBC et cetera on your phone when you are in Europe or further abroad through a UK mobile network provider as I mentioned we use Tesco because there are no data roaming charges.

If you’re using a uk mobile phone then the apps don’t know your abroad . I’ve never used a vpn . My id sim which I use for voice and unlimited data has been pretty faultless - currently in Italy and have been for 4 weeks with no issues (except on the side of Vesuvius for some reason ) . Try it maybe ?

I’ll give it a go. Last time I tried ( a couple of years ago now) the apps recognised we were not in the UK. Always annoyed me because I pay my licence fee, but it was something to do with syndicating rights apparently.

It would be really great if I don’t need to use the VPN because it’s a pain.

I also stream bbc radio all day long without issues

Portugal is an exception where you can’t

Yes you can although a mifi unit will probably give you a better stronger signal.
Just need to make sure the source is identified in the drop down menu.
I haven’t managed to mirror the phone onto the tv yet but I am sure you can also do that - iPhone/firestick. So work in progress.

If local SIM cards are installed in a phone or using Site Wifi, then a VPN will be required...if however a UK SIM is used then that's not the case.
Data allowance is a key factor..watching TV is quite a data hungry method....but as Sat systems are no longer an option, (in my case at least) we rely on an unlimited data plan...

The need of a VPN depends if it’s a uk sim or not. UK sim no VPN.

Well it also depends if the UK sim provider breaks out locally (which is an option on roaming for networks, some choose to take this).

I've certainally had Portugese IP addresses on a Three business sim roaming in Portugal before, ditto Chinese ones in China.

Thing is I think everyone should have a VPN as it's not "your" choice when they break out locally, as sometimes local legislation requires it such as in India, China and Portugal from time to time. Don't assume your "whatever" provider always works, as by time you need a VPN it can be too late. Try installing a VPN on a device on a cruise ship in examples that don't work. However if your VPN is installed prior to travel on a cruise ship it'll work fine when on it (the Cruise lines starlink prevents installation but not USE of a vpn).

I intend to load a VPN on the firestick before we go. Checking the "fair" usage policy on both our phones, it looks like we can use them for 60 ish days then then may be shut off.
