We have an Alpine INES900R stereo head unit fitted to our 2012 Bailey 620. The van has a standard alternator (non-smart). When driving we often listen to ebooks played through an ipad connected to the Alpine via a lead with a 3.5mm jack plug. The Alpine doesn’t permit Bluetooth for this function.
We’ve noticed an intrusive whine when doing this that isn’t there when using the radio or CD function of the Alpine. The whine is related to the engine’s revs, so I’m thinking it’s probably caused by the alternator. Is there a way I can stop or even reduce this annoying whine? We’re about to head off to France for two months and we listen to books a lot of the time.
Loving Ian Rankin, Bill Bryson, Ruth Rendell and others🙂

you'll need an alternator noise filter probably.
how this is done with the alpine Im not sure

I'd try a really good quality lead of a different length to connect the phone first it sounds like it's the lead picking up interference. You could try wrapping a bit of aluminium foil around it first as a very cheap experiment!

Right, I’ll do some research on fitting an alternator noise filter! 👍

I’d actually thought that too so bought an expensive (relatively) earthed lead, with gold connectors but no difference. Have tried moving the lead away from the ipad/iphone in case there was some inducted noise from these to no avail. 🤔

great shout

May try fitting one of these on the lead. I bought a pack about a year ago to use with the dash cam and satnav which are both hard wired. Will post back when tested later in the week. Van’s in storage.

Also could be down to poor earth connections on the head unit and the aerial.
Yes, I was worried about this as I’ve no idea how to get the Alpine out to check this. There is no obvious way to remove it. On my Audi there is a special u-shaped prong tool that you push ani unclicks the unit which you can then pull out. The trim around the Alpine looks thin and flimsy and I don’t want to risk breaking it by lifting to find similar ‘release’ holes.

If my filters don’t work, will try the aluminium foil suggested by The Wino . After all, we’ll be wearing tin foil hats to avoid being targeted by aliens on the search for abductees as we pass through the Midlands.😀

If the wire is thin and the hole is big, try looping the wire more than once through the ferrite. Each loop reduces the noise by a percentage, so more loops is better.

😀
Very wise. Apparently they take random samples of intelligent lifeforms from around he world, but that's best place for a control sample. :eek:
::bigsmile:
For extracting the radio, I'm no expert, but there are alternatives to the U-shaped prong tool, maybe it's one of these.

On my Bailey 68-2, the Pioneer is bolted in with a pull off surround. Try looking for fitting instructions for your Alpine to see how they are fitted.
