Having finally persuaded the missus to take the far side of the drop-down bed in our Bailey 540, it seems that the mattress on that side has sagged a bit. Nothing to do with the 16 stone spouse that used to sleep that side I'm sure. My question is this - given the fragile and asthmatic nature of the Bailey electric lifting mechanism I am loath to replace the mattress with anything that might weigh more, but the original item from Prima is the fat end of 600 quid. Has anyone found an alternative?

In our last van, we hacked up an IKEA foam mattress with a bread knife to fit the space. The cover unzips, we just sewed it back to its new shape. It was the cheapest mattress they had, single firm density, thin and very light. I swear it was more comfortable than our £1500 mattress at home. And definitely better than the "luxury" memory foam thing in our new van.

We got the. cheap foam mattress from IKEA and took the bread knife to it to reshape it.
They are ‘egg box’ type, found it a bit odd to sleep on so put a very thin topper on-it fitted inside mattress cover-very comfortable now!

A quality mattress is expensive, we have Vispring at home which cost thousands & the 1000 pocket sprung with 7cms of memory foam singles we have in the van cost £500 each.

Hi Jonno I wouldn't describe the OEM mattress as "quality" compared to our domestic mattresses but it's certainly expensive.. hence the question. Thanks for responding.
