Planning to go to northern Italy in March - is my son correct that we will have to have , at least , all season tyres fitted to remain legal ?

Not in Italy, unless you're going into the mountains of course and then it would be silly not to take some precautions. However it depends on your route and Germany and Austria certainly have "winter" regulations that require winter tyres or carrying chains.

Personally we changed to winter tyres years ago and have run on them ever since with no problems wherever we've been. They're also very good at getting you off wet muddy fields!

So you get decent wear and tear out of them ? ESP during the summer months ?

I think that for most MHomers' use of 5-8,000 miles a year they will not wear out before the recommended change at 5 years.

That is my experience.

Yes, they tend to wear out around the time they are "time-expired" although personally I've never seen any evidence of ageing. Maybe because we use our van regularly and it doesn't stand still for weeks on end.

If I had to be totally honest I'd guess they probaby wear faster than non-winter tyres but it's never been an issue for me.
