hi all

I have a small leak from the joint between the end of the alde extension tube and the alde bleed valve (see pictures).
I have removed the leaking valve and brought a new one....here's my question.......should i use any type of sealant or PTFE tape between the new valve and the old extension tube?

Is there a rubber or fibre washer inside the threaded hole?

If yes, nothing is required, in not then I would use PTFE tape, or a sealer on the threads before inserting.

And remember to put the PTFE tape (if required) on the correct way. ..!

Hi LA thanks, no washer supplied just thread on threads

If relying on the threads I would use PTFE tape, or some sealant, but PTFE is cheap and easy.

If when you dry assemble it and the insert bottoms out, and it has a flat base, you could try and find a rubber washer, or fibre washer, but you need both parts that contact each other to be flat so the washer doesn’t distort, or become cut.

thanks for your comments and answers

I just had a call with a technical guy at Alde, he said no PTFE, no washer just use Loctite 577 thread sealer and not to overtighten the valve

I would use LSX plumbers sealant. It is made for that sort of job and is excellent.

As a general point, PTFE is most effective when used on a tapered thread, i.e. the male threaded part is slightly conical so it jams in the female thread before it ‘bottoms out’
Parallel threads normally use a sealing washer
