Due to set off on first trip round europe tomorrow.
Started engine today, first time for 3 weeks and airbag light came on.
Starter battery has 20w dedicated solar panel maintaining it.
Didn't have opportunity to check with meter today.
Checked fuse which is ok.
Don't have OBD Reader and main dealers are not close as we live in south devon.
I would welcome ideas from the learned masses please.
Setting off towards shuttle tomorrow morning so panicking now.

You can run with airbag light on BUT be aware in an accident the airbags may not work !!

Check for any possible loose connections under the seats but really you need a OBD reader to check the fault.
If the ECU is faulty (which is usually the case) there is lots of info on here and on youtube about it.
Basically needs a replacement and some re-programming (proxi alignment). You can send the unit away but seems 50/50 if they work ok, stories vary.

Could you move the trip back by a few days ? Giving you time to get an OBD reader, maybe a replacement part if needed.. Fitting is quite easy, did mine before the wife had made the tea. Local garage did the alignment for £40 in less than 10 mins...

Also... maybe state where you are or add that to your profile in case someone local can help..

Thanks for that. Can't delay unfortunately. Travelling from South Devon in the morning for overnight at Warminster then on to Ashford on Sunday

You need a fault code , no good guessing with these units. Most OBD readers won't access the airbag module on the high speed CANbus, if you can take a detour onto M27 I could have a quick look when you're passing, providing it's not silly O'Clock .

Too late now, the damage is done.

Safer to say, that the airbags will not work.

And it will fail the MOT. It is a well known FIAT fault. Plenty of information on here about the airbag control unit.

Buy a new starter battery before fitting a new airbag ECU.

A very common issue and loads of posts about it if you use the Search facility with the search words 'Airbag light'. Have a look at this one...........

Firmly touching wood, fingers crossed, clutching a lucky rabbit's foot etc etc

I had exactly the same issue caused [I firmly believe] by a completely deceased vehicle battery.
Being absolutely non mechanically inclined, I had Mountain Motorhomes replace it [edit, the battery, not the sensor].
As a bonus, they had a mate pop over with a laptop and he managed to clear the fault code & more importantly the red light on the dash.
Unfortunately, he was just leaving as I returned, so couldn't learn what the software was.

Just paid around £470 + fitting + diagnostics + VAT for a new one😱

I think if you've got the correct software for it multiecuscan can read the fault codes but not sure if it can reset / proxi align the airbag ecu.

Multiecuscan can do more than most of us are capable of or understanding!
All you need is the obd adapter that suits your model of fiat.

I would just ignore the air bag warning light and enjoy my holiday. Worry about getting it sorted when you get back. ( I’ll get my tin hat on now 🤭)

I would ignore it and have a great holiday, buy a new unit from Fiat on your return along with a new vehicle battery, and i will post you the Multiuscan diagnostics and you can run a proxi align to code the new module to the van and the light will go out!

Thanks sleeveless for your kind offer. Unfortunately we won't be able take advantage.

I did this. Not reset but repaired and guaranteed. My sons use them for their garage work.
Twice the cost of a reset, but cheaper than new and the required proxy alignment that is also needed
Resetting may be required more than once.

Mine went recently - nothing wrong with the battery, always topped up on float due to 350 watts of solar and a battery master.

As long as you have your seatbelt on, you should be OK. The airbag is a minor issue in a crash.
PS - if you have a crash - don't mention the light to the insurer. There is no way they could know when it came on.

Ours went recently and brought a new one from coastal Motorhomes. If you know someone with Multiscan they can reprogram it for you. We drove around for a few weeks with the warning light on. Sorted that and now we are in France with the Adblue warning light on - gotta love this Fiat/Pug faults!

They would know if the airbags and seatbelt tensioners hadn't deployed though , also depends on the event causing the ECU malfunction light to show , voltage issues amongst others are recorded in the EEPROM chip which collects/stores a whole host of crash data , specialists like Crashdata have the equipment to read this data which would give an indication as to when the ECU shut down occurred. Having said that , many of us have driven vehicles without airbags or seat belt tensioners quite happily in the past.

It can but advises making a backup of settings before starting.
