AirBag ecu failure

The stats show that there should be a pile of 2,000,000 defunct airbag ECUs. Has anybody seen it on Google Earth?

That's truly appalling and very wasteful if it's caused by cost cutting on just a couple of internal components.

I would think the number of airbag control modules sold would have indicated that. Today I bought one from Coastal Motorhomes I asked do you sell many? this is the 4th ive sold today , thats typical and theres 3 of us taking orders. That number would have been somewhere sometime.

So that gives an indication of motorhome failures. Are there any comparable figures for commercial vans? Are you aware of a responses to a similar survey for them? Are they suffering a similar failure rate or does regular almost daily use and higher mileage make a difference to failure rate?

P.S. It is quite appalling that you have a choice of which money pit to choose - Ford with injector and wet belt issues or Ducato with airbag and steering failures. You just have a choice of which money pit gets your circa £80k!!!

Took mine off and had it repaired in Liverpool lasted three days so I replaced it with a new one refitted it had my local garage clear faults been fine ever since all this took place last year on my Hymer b558dl very easy to fix

As others have said - my issue was a flat battery that caused a problem in the dash display panel. The airbag warning light would glow, not quite fully on but enough to fail MOT. sent unit off for repair and all good. That was on an 65 plate Ducato.

My 23 plate had an issue from new of not showing the correct oil level. Cause - a flat battery during build! Solved by Fiat garage resetting a code in engine management ECU.

If you have a Ducato etc, don’t let the voltage drop below about 10v. Ok to remove battery, just avoid the ECUs receiving a low voltage.

It seems that (always) before disconnecting the battery, you should wait 3 or 6 minutes for the computer to go to sleep (and don’t re-awaken it in that interval by operating anything electrical e.g. opening a door)

For information, I was one of the “lucky” recipients of a duff airbag ECU!! Speaking to Rockingham motors at Corby the service guy said he had repaired”loads” of ECU’s on Motorhome conversions but he could not remember changing one on a van!!!

So that suggests a problem either with MoHo use or MoHo equipment?
Equipment: It could be all the leisure battery electrics in the back?
Use: Infrequent use might mean sub-optimal voltage on the engine battery

As to my vote (2017 Ducato) it failed 4 hours ago MOT booked Wednesday. Please reply we need this info for an informed decision even though I suspect the only way is a new ECU.

Ours failed 4 minutes before our MOT. I turned into the wrong place, turned engine off, realised we were at wrong place, turned engine back on to go to right place & light went off. £800 later hubby was not happy

From the the amount that fail on there way to or just before their M.O.T. I now wonder if it's a form of "white coat syndrome". Brown coat syndrome possibly.

Hi. We’ve got a 2017 Ducato and ours went last year. We sent it to crashdata. Cost £95 to have it reset. It came back with a letter stating that a battery out of condition will cause it to fail.
Before I put it back in I took the battery out that we had fitted 6 months earlier and took it to Halfords to be checked where we were told it was a leisure battery that had been put in .
Went a bit ballistic and took it back to the place where we had it fitted and gave them the bill for repairs. They paid it believe it or not.
So I think that a dodgy battery could well be the cause as we’ve had no problems since. Touch wood.

Lenny HB any comment on Data repair less than 2 years, initialy i was expecting this to be much greater than 50%.
The Northern rate >2yrs at 83% better, obviously new ECU better results but more than I would like to see pherhaps they were pre 2020 ECUs.
If you had a replacement before 2019 you may be unlucky enough to get another failure.

My 2017 Autotrail airbag sensor went around a year ago. Crashdata reset it and advised my fault was due to an over voltage. Had a new one fitted and ok so far. I believe there was a bad batch of the units and newer units are less prone to power fluctuations.
