Air con button not working Ducato X250

Update:
I’m on a site now so can have a prat with it.
The air con button works (illuminates) only on speeds 1/2/3 but the fan won’t work on theses settings.
The fan works on speed 4 but the air con button light goes out. Switch it to speed 3 and the light comes back on but the blower/fan stops.

The fan/blower did work the other day on settings 1/2/3 and 4.
The fan working on speed 4 suggests the blower resistor has gone pop. On speed 4, the resistor is effectively bypassed. In my previous 2007 Ducato, I replaced the fan resistor twice in 5 years.

I'm not sure what your A/C wouldn't fire up on speed 4 though. Unless it's also out of gas? Then -might be- that the A/C checks the fan is spinning first. When the fan is spinning, it runs the compressor. It fails, so it switches off the A/C light. But at speeds 1/2/3, it never sees the fan come on, so it doesn't try to run the compressor, so it doesn't fail and switch the light off...? Maybe???

If the fan will only work on speed 4 it's likely the fan resistor has failed, I don't know why the AC will not work on speed 4, it does on mine, maybe it's a Fiat thing.

Try turning the speed knob to 1 and a half or 2 and a half.....not joking.

Thanks everyone.
From your experiences, how much is a fan resistor and how easy are they to fit?
I’m just thinking of calling in at a Fiat garage between here and Spain. If it’s an easy fix I will call in. If it’s an expensive all day job I’ll wait til I get back to the uk.
Will just have to travel in my string vest again 🤣

And yes, the engine was running when I tried everything.

I’ll try the half way between numbers as well and see if that works.
Thanks again

We use our A/C all year round, cool settings in the summer, heat settings in the winter, this stops the seals failing from not being used.

Thanks everyone.

See if you can hang on until you get to Spain, Labour rates are a lot lower.

It takes about 10 minutes to get to the fan resistor. It's accessed from the passenger footwell, under the glovebox. However, it's likely that it's the loom or connector that's cooked itself. You often need to splice in a new bit of cabling. Not a hard job, but it does need tools. Parts only cost a £15 too. But it's probably at least and hour of fiddly labour.

So, I managed to find a YouTube film if a guy changing his resistor (maybe the same as above) and easily removed the old to ensure I was ordering the correct one.
£12 on Amazon and the plan is my wife will bring it with her to Spain when they fly out.
Looking at it, it looks like it’s been in water for 5 years!
If the system then needs gassing I can sort that afterwards.

Fingers crossed, that will do it.
Once again, thank you to everyone who’s contributed.
I will let you know if it works when fitted.

The resistor sits in the airstream of the blower. It probably gets blasted with pretty humid air quite a bit. So yeah, it gets pretty crusty.

What does the connector and wiring loom look like? Are there any obvious hot spots or melty bits? Both times mine died, the failing resistor melted the connector.

They looked ok.
Time will tell I suppose
