AGM Batteries: What Are They?

Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries are a type of lead-acid battery that uses a fibreglass mat to absorb and hold the electrolyte, rather than it being in liquid form like traditional flooded lead-acid batteries. This design makes AGM batteries spill-proof, maintenance-free, and more resistant to vibration, which makes them popular for leisure applications such as motorhomes, boats, and off-grid power setups.

Advantages of AGM Batteries:

  • Spill-Proof & Maintenance-Free: Since the electrolyte is absorbed in a fibreglass mat, there’s no risk of leakage, even if the battery casing is damaged. Unlike traditional wet lead-acid batteries, they don’t require topping up with distilled water.
  • Deep Cycling Ability: AGM batteries can be discharged deeper than standard wet batteries without causing as much damage to the plates, making them more suitable for leisure applications.
  • Fast Charging: AGM batteries can accept a higher charge current compared to standard lead-acid batteries, reducing charge times.
  • Low Self-Discharge: When not in use, AGM batteries hold their charge better than wet batteries, making them ideal for seasonal use.
  • Vibration Resistance: The tightly packed design makes them more resistant to shocks and vibrations, which is useful in motorhomes and marine applications.

Common Issues & Short Lifespan in Motorhomes:

Despite their advantages, many motorhome owners have reported poor lifespan from AGM batteries. This is often due to:
  1. Inadequate Charging: AGM batteries require a higher charging voltage than wet lead-acid batteries. If a vehicle’s alternator or charger isn’t optimised for AGM, the battery may never fully charge, leading to sulfation and premature failure.
  2. Incorrect Depth of Discharge (DoD): Although AGM batteries can handle deep cycling better than wet batteries, discharging them below 50% regularly (or worse, below 20%) significantly shortens their lifespan.
  3. Overcharging: Charging AGM's at too high a voltage or leaving them on a cheap trickle charger that doesn’t have a smart charging profile can cause overcharging, leading to internal damage and shortened life.
  4. Heat Sensitivity: AGM batteries are more sensitive to high temperatures, which can accelerate degradation. Motorhomes with poorly ventilated battery compartments can contribute to this problem.

Proper Charging & Maintenance:

To get the best life from an AGM battery, follow these charging guidelines:
  • Charge Voltage:
    • Bulk Charge: 14.4V – 14.8V (check manufacturer specifications)
    • Float Charge: 13.5V – 13.8V
  • Charging Methods:
    • Use a smart charger with an AGM profile. A 3-stage or 4-stage charger is ideal.
    • Ensure your motorhome’s alternator and charging system are AGM-compatible. Many factory-fitted systems are optimised for wet lead-acid batteries and may undercharge AGMs.
    • If using solar panels, ensure the charge controller supports AGM batteries and provides the correct voltage settings.
  • Avoid Deep Discharges: Try to keep the depth of discharge above 50% for the best lifespan.

Are AGM Batteries the Best Choice for Motorhomes?

While AGM batteries are better than traditional wet lead-acid batteries in many ways, they aren’t always the best option for motorhomes. Many owners have moved to Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries, which offer much longer life, deeper discharge capabilities, and faster charging. However, lithium batteries require a compatible charging system and a higher initial investment.

If you are using AGM batteries, ensure they are charged correctly and not over-discharged to get the best performance and lifespan.

He can have his own account as your husband/partner, it doesn't cost. Ask Jim ;)

But that will not stop Hubby posting on her account  , except the way she stops it.
