All the gear, and no idea!
Hi all, picking our first (new to us) MH next week, and my first trip is straight from the supplying dealer to the Bulldog Rescue Day at Newark where me and Moo's are camping there for the night before just to try and get familiar with it before we go to Austria.

In September I was going to Austria on the bike, but now going in MH. It is a predominantly driving trip as I have quite a lot of miles to do in a short period of time (basically substituting the stops I would have done in a hotel with stops in the MH at stellplatz or campsites). The biggest question I have is when you get to a destination en route i.e (Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber) and you have set your heart on being there, and all the stellplatz places (around 22) are full, what do you do?? I guess you might say move on somewhere else but when you have geared your trip around this stop, it could prove a huge disappointment.
All my future trips will be at a less frantic pace, but this trip (for the bike) was planned last September!

Personally i wouldn’t plan my trip to that extent. You can’t guarantee your stay on any particular Aire or stellplatz. However, as mentioned above, if you look on park4night or campercontact you’ll be able to find plenty to choose from. Some of the best stops we’ve had were found after the original choice was full.

We plan where we’re going but don’t plan anything other than that... motorhomes are fantastic in that they offer the freedom to find hidden gems!

As are travelling outside of the holiday season (September), I don't think you will too much of a problem. As said above, don't over plan the trip

That said, from South Wales, I regularly drive to and from Austria/Slovenia without an overnight stop.

Also, you may be comparing your experience of touring on a motorbike, which is is much more tiring than driving a van, plus the fuel tank range is 3 to 4 times as long.

Not sure of your route, but most service areas in Germany offer unlimited time for parking,
& there are many Autohofs - don't plan it too much, just do it!

Hi Nasher, first rough sketch of the trip is luxembourg, schwangau, kals am Grossglockner and arriving at the "European bike rally" in Faaker see Austria. coming back I wanted to factor in "Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber" for a couple of nights!!

BTW I will prob heading down your way in the near future (Bridgend) to see my sister (I can park on their drive)!

I fear you are in for grief.

On a bike it's seven league boots, enjoy the road and the scenery.

Different mind set in MH, switch off any thought of progress and enjoyment of the road, plod along and chill out, it's all you can do. It's a waiting for god experience, rather than let the devil catch me if he can.

Mind you, you probably won't be bored, dealer to destination is the most optimistic thing you can do in a MH.

We'll be filling up in Luxemberg on Friday then stopping in Metz. Fussen some time later, great place for e-bikes.

I've got Grossglockner lined up next year on two wheels, but now you mention it !! Someone on here reported doing it successfully in his MH.

Hi Brian we go to Austria every year to the European bike rally and plan to do the Grossglockner every year but its not always possible 3 times out of the last 4 years its had snow on the tops and would only let cars up!!
On the occasions we have been up there, there's lots of MH's up there, its fairly tame (more so than the Stelvio) so I don't think you will have a problem.

Think i m the guilty party for the glossglockner.
NB if youre staying overnight on the free aire make sure you are on that part of the road by 1530 as they closed it for unknown reason - possibly avalanche fear so maybe all right later in year.
Allow all day for the road.
There is a splinter road that goes up to edel something or other and no motorhomes up there. I took the 110 cc scooter out of the van and rode up there in sandals and white socksView media item 22903The bike now has "glossglockner sticker" so cant wait till someone notices it at Tescos !
This was the height of the snow about 15th MayView media item 22905Whatever you buy just remember you are under 3500 kgs otherwise the price goes up a lot.
It is also possible to get to glossglockner and through austria to italy without paying for tolls on other roads. Dont plan on Lienz aire at the other side, loads of no camping signs and pictures of towed vehicles

Further, at a lot of aires you have to put your french hat on and just create a parking space. You will be amazed at the initiative shown on occasions

Hi can you tell me whereabouts the free aire is on the Grossglockner (I am very familiar with the road but always been on the bike so did not take any real notice for MH stops)

Oh and the road splinters off up to the Edelweisspitz cafe/viewing area, but I look on the webcam for the Edelweisspitz every weekend and I have seen MH up there overnight (I know you aren't supposed to)!!

We pick our new to us MH up in the morning and yes it's 3500kgs (It had to be so the wife can drive it)

My response is to say 'don't plan', it'll change anyway. We are off in a couple of weeks across the channel, don't really know where we are going.

Duly done. It was 1.13E per litre. Now parked by the Moselle in Metz.

I would give you the co-ordinates but am rather challenged in the IT department but look at the pass and you ll see a splinter road to the left and a place called
Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe
and this is where you are allowed to stay overnight.
The bit up to the edelweissplatzmeistercorner thingy place can be done by a motorhome under 3500 HOWEVER we monitored it with cars passing each other and i wouldnt fancy going up in there in the daytime. Certainly no motorhomes up there during the day. You will need a clear run or hope you meet anything on the bends. The road is cobbled and really not very wide.

Understood but i was thinking "Cant believe Span is cheaper than Luxembourg" in disappointed way.

It surprised me too, even the booze in the petrol/supermarket wasn't that cheap, but the place was heaving so the locals thought it ok.

Last summer we travelled down through Belguim, Luxembourg and down into Bavaria, stopping at various locations on the way down.
We also ventured into Austria then back into Germany to Garmisch Partenkirchen. Every stellplatz we stopped at had plenty of room.
