I'm just getting stuff in order before heading off to Europe for a couple of months next week and thought I'd check our vehicle and breakdown cover as we're planning to travel out to Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia.

I feel a bit stupid now as having checked both the Natiowide Breakdown policy and our NFU vehicle policy, We'd be in a bit of a pickle if we had an accident whilst over the water and the moho wasn't drivable!

Nationwide only provide 'Accident Assist' in mainland GB and NFU's 'Road Rescue After an Accident' is limited to UK only.

Thankfully the last two European trips have been accident free and I've spent the last hour so digging into the threads on insurance etc (which has raised a whole bunch of other questions ) but couldn't find anything that would answer my predicament.

So my question is, do other funster's vehicle OR breakdown insurance cover recovery after an accident in Europe and, if so, could I ask who your insured with please?

My NFU policy is due for renewal very soon and although I've been happy with their price (not had to claim yet, thankfully) I've also discovered they don't cover Croatia so we need to make a decision about whether we skip Croatia or change insurers.

TIA

I'm insured with comfort and you got me thinking and checked my policy, transportation/recovery after an accident covered abroad with certain criteria depending on level of repairs required including bringing the vehicle back to the UK if it can not be repaired within a set time limit....I assumed rightly or wrongly if you have vehicle insurance to cover travel abroad then it would include getting the vehicle back to the UK if required.

Comfort 👍
We had breakdown in Spain
Recovered to Ford garage for repair .
We were out up in 4:5 star hotel for 4 days.
If they couldn’t repair they would take us to ferry point and vehicle would follow at later date 🤷‍♀️
Insurance advised us against that but we did get put back on the road.

My advice to you would be:
Check all phone numbers are correct as language barrier was the most stressful part 😥. But we were well looked after 😉

NFU does cover Croatia for 3rd party risks, a lot of people risk it, I don't think I would with our new van.

We did Croatia a few years ago was not that impressed with it, we are with NFU now, good job I don't want to go back.

Thanks, I've just requested a quote from Comfort but they don't like my storage location so I'll need to call them tomorrow :giggle:

I made the same assumption about cover but reading the NFU policy, if you have an accident out of the UK, you're on your own!!!

Thanks, looks like they provided a good service after a breakdown and chippie confirmed above they will recover you after an accident. Just waiting for a quote.

I appreciate the feedback on Croatia Lenny - I'd be a fool to ignore it given your experience (y)

Regarding NFU though, it's this bit of the policy that worries me about Europe in general....

So, if some bugger ran into me (or worse, it was my fault) and the moho was undriveable, I struggle to know who to call - given Nationwide wouldn't respond outside of GB.

Breakdown insurance won't cover you after an accident.

Our insurance policy says much the same as yours regarding " Territorial LIMITS"
I questioned that and they got back to me saying that the cover is the same in the EU as in the UK so recovery would be included.

So who knows. I hope never to find out

I'm on the insurance merry-go-round at the moment, did a quote with Ripe (using MHF link) and they don't include some countries such as Andorra and Switzerland in their European cover unless you pay another £83, then their NCD protection is another £83! Their cover for personal items is low too. Once I'd matched the cover with our existing policy it was way more expensive than others with better cover.

I'm currently with Comfort for both insurance and recovery so in the event of an accident it's just them to deal with so no arguing about who would do what.

Have you tried NFU? We had been with Comfort for about 14 years but far too expensive for the Compactline.
