Abuse of site facilities

Am I being a miserable git?

We are currently on a 5 pitch site on Unst, which has hard standings EHU, Fresh Water, black waste and oddly enough a toilet and shower block split in 2 each has a toilet and shower one if which is designated for campers use and is free and the other has toilet and Shower which is metered £1.00 for 5 minute For members of the public and users of the harbour.

The issue is there is a PVC with a mature couple wildcamping on ground opposite the shower block. Both occupants are using the campsite facilities including the ’Free shower’ and black waste, getting their water from the sink in the toilet but no Electric, we are paying £20 per night , they are paying nothing and although there has been a space available on the site they choose to still wildcamp.

Are they wrong to be using the free facilities and not paying should something be said ? Do you think this is fair ?
There are no staff on site only a phone number.

Thank you for most heart felt concern which I do appreciate, but no problems with lack of Otters, we have been following 2 families and 2 different Dog Otters. One of the families actually live in the harbour breakwater and perform in front of the van.

Needless to say I didn’t say anything, they stopped two nights then cleared off site. We then saw them parked up behind a derelict Croft around 10miles away so obviously living the FLT life. Funny it would have been even cheaper for them to have stayed on mainland Scotland and not had to pay the Ferry costs which are not cheap.

We are practicing FLTers. Done a few one nighters this year wouldn't dream of going onto a nearby camp site to use their facilities. Now a garage, pub, supermarket is ok eh..........just asking, as said, practicing.

Don't mind the parking bit so much ...although I think it's a little cheeky to park right next to the site. Using the free shower is taking the pee . Even if they used the pay one it would be a little better. As for the dogs sitting everywhere they just sound like lazy chancers. I mean if they even brought the dogs over to shit around other folks vans I could accept but have they never heard of not shitting on your own doorstep lol

If I was on an island needing a local ferry services to get off I would be very careful about who I upset. The skipper of the ferry will know absolutely everything that happens on the island.

The exact same happens at New England Bay , people use the free site then wander along the beach to use the site facility’s , it’s entertains to see them skulking about the site getting a free shower and using the loos when we are paying for it.

When car drivers do wrong they don't give every car driver a bad name. Most reasonable and sensible people know there are the bad elements of everything. Anyone who thinks it applies to everyone is the person at fault and no one else.

I disagree Tam, if I owned a small 5 space site, and factored £20 per nite stay per van, covering the cost of the facilities, upkeep and insurance and then the water rates and electric was stolen by FLT's and the costs exceed the return, the site shuts. End of.
Therefore it might be only a few, but everyone gets tarred, if not by opinion then by loss of sites and facilities.
The loss of any site due to not being financially viable due to cost v return (not many can subsidise other peoples lifestyle), due to the "bad elements" affects the all.
Then the closure of the site affects the FLT's too, as well as those prepared to pay for the facilities. Even if wild camping, the closure of the site reduces facilities when emptying/ refilling is required.
(And talking of bad elements tarring all, in my opinion, all BMW drivers should get refunds for useless equipment fitted like mirrors, indicators and speedometers )
Edit; And FLT or not, there is no excuse for not picking up sh1t.

I wish I could agree with you but sadly I think you are wrong. It only takes a few to get us all a bad name, hence all the new height barriers and overnight parking restrictions. The big difference is that most people drive so we all know that not all drivers are bad. However most people are not motorhome owners, so a few prominent offenders get us all a bad name. They don’t notice the litter and poo we didn’t leave behind but they do notice the few that take liberties.

Many people in my village think that all bikers are noisy speedsters. This is because some bikers blast up Bury Hill with non standard silencers causing a nuisance. Some think all cyclists wearing lycra are a problem but again it is only the few that catch our eye.
