Three weeks ago we were booked on Portsmouth - Cherbourg crossing

We arrived a couple of hours early and went into town to find somewhere to eat. Our van was parked by the side of the road outside the restaurant in a busy area but when we got back we found that someone had tried to take our E-Bikes from the rear cycle rack. They had undone all the straps and left the bikes dangling off the back.

Fortunately, they gave up when they found the Secure Gold padlock cable.

I thought this was a one-off until I got talking to another Brit on a campsite in Portugal who had an identical experience - also in Portsmouth 3 weeks ago. His security cable defeated them but they cut all the other available cables and slashed his bike cover.

I dont know if Portsmouth is a particular hotspot for this type of thing

Wasn't there a thread a while back that bikes were being stolen from mh's AFTER they had checked in at Portsmouth & in the boarding lanes?

I use to do a lot of work in Portsmouth not far from the ferry port and if you stood still someone would have your shoelaces!!

Got to a point where I had so much trouble I doubled and tripled the prices so I didn’t get any more work😳😳

As with most large cities Portsmouth has problems just unfortunate they are near the ferry ports

My niece was an A&E nurse in the hospital there. Someone stole both rear lights from her LR Freelander in the hospital car park during the pandemic.

Blimey. Just read this. Have been to Pompey for the football a few times and it was as rough as a pigs arse for the most part. But nicking lights off a nurse's car! Oh Please!.

My Dad was a Pompey rating and Mum nursed at St Mary's Fratton....

One of the reasons we bought our van with a big garage was to put bikes in to avoid this type of incident. The only issues (apart from gassing) I've heard of on Aires and sites are people attempting to steal bikes from racks on the back of MH's.

It's one reason we took our ordinary bikes rather than e bikes on our trip to Holland and Germany this year. If you put a few thousand quids worth of easily sold unregistered ebikes on the back of the MH it's likely to be a target for thieves. That being said I realised in Holland there are so many bikes of all types that the odds of being the one that gets stolen are probably pretty low.

Well, Portsmouth is the best place in England that I've lived.
If they were to give the world an enema Portsmouth would not be the place where they put the tube in.
