As The Artilleryman says, if you need glasses to meet the Class 2 eyesight requirements, then wear them for all driving. To be honest, the basic car driving eyesight requirements are quite poor. Being able to clearly see what is ahead of you is pretty vital to road safety.
You’ll get used to wearing glasses 🤓

If driving in Europe, most countries require you to have a spare pair of glasses in the vehicle.

What a lucky rule that is too, Nick broke his glasses 2 weeks into our last 2 month tour. We both wear varifocals. The distance part hasn’t changed much in years. Thank heavens for kindles for reading though as his spare wasn’t as good for that for long periods. You know how you can pick up reading glasses just about anyware in the UK, Poundland even. Well you can’t in Romania and Bulgaria!

Always carry spares and make sure they are the correct prescription

Got to book my eyesight test next week , will be straight down to the local wholesaler to have lenses updated if required.

Great guys, I will miss them when they retire

Good advice but from a strictly legal point of view each vehicle category on a UK licence carries its own notes as to any specific requirements fot that category, so police would be looking to see whether the B category has code 01 in the RH column.

I am amazed there is ANY difference, why?

I used to need glasses for driving (not anymore) and I thought it just stated on my old licence something like, ' with eyesight correction '

Surely if you cannot SAFELY see to drive a truck, you cannot SAFELY see to drive a car that can kill at a much greater speed! 🤔

PS. Why would ANYONE not want to wear driving glasses if they can allow you to see better? 🤔

Happy we haven't disappointed! 😄
Sometimes we just have to tickle the outrage.
FOr me the whole 3500 to 3850kg farce could be a toss of the coin. the van is the same and could be run @ either wt, i up plated to 3850kg for cheaper VED and less likely to be over wt. Cost of retaining C1 £170 (d4d plus glasses)cost of reverting to 3500kg ?£250 to £0 downplating cost plus£165+ ved increase. Yes if i can ride at 130mph why cant i plod about in a 60mph slug box (or snail). Outrage tickled?

I wish I had my licence back. Applied 90 days before the expiry date which was Monday gone. Still now sign. Called DVLA Sunday and she had no news other than saying I can still drive under Section 88. I asked her if they had a Spanish translation for Section 88. Unfortunately it does not work there was the reply.

That's interesting, when they suspended my HGV and PSV licences 20yrs ago due to me having cancer, I was told that they would send a letter covering me to continuing driving until the Medical Section had decided.
I said that it was my own business and, as I was driving abroad a lot, a letter in English, MIGHT be read by a Policeman in Paris, Stockholm, Brussels etc. but perhaps not in the countryside.

They said they would put my query in the PRIORITY line and I received it back about 10days later.

PS As an aside, did you wait, before applying, until you received your reminder (do they STILL remind you?) or did you apply independently? 🤔

You will have code 01 on all classes of vehicle, hence you could be done if not wearing glasses when driving your car, even though you pass the CAR eyesight test without glasses.
Not necessarily. I have 01 on my C and Ce but not on any others. Is your C1 on grandfather rights? Perhaps that's the difference.

Btw I do think eyesight needs to be better to drive full hgv because stopping distances and manouvring tolerances tighter. My vision was only just under for the Hgv eyesight test and find no problem driving other vehicles.

Please be aware if you have Glaucoma you MUST tell the DVLA and your Insurance or you are not covered if accident happens, you or your van/car. DVLA do a special field of vision test for this.

Can you read a standard UK number plate at 25 feet with or without glasses? That is the standard question asked by the dvla. The police could also test you on that criteria if you are stopped by them..

I presume so having been told so by 2 opticions and a d4doc.
As to spelling not too bad for someone who failed o level english 5 times. Didnt stop me getting a degree in Physical Science (Natural Sciences) and getting some inovative designs into space. The real question is can i still spell chwiorwyth. I suspect not quick check gives chwiorydd

No one appears to have flagged up the insurance implications, if you were involved in an RTC in your car and not wearing glasses as required for the HGV class I think you’d find that you might be considered as not complying with the conditions and not covered for you own losses

If a licence was like jongood quoted here:-

"Not necessarily. I have 01 on my C and Ce but not on any others. Is your C1 on grandfather rights? Perhaps that's the difference"

If there is no (01) note to the B Category I think the insurance company would have no chance..

more than 10 days since posting, no licence, but its been returned.
I obviously missunderstood the rules and thought they would use the passport photo (mentioned here?). So quick read up, trip to Sainburys photoboth and its wait again.

I have an 01 on every category Jon.
I remember attending a previous medical, where the Doctor told me that I didn't need to wear glasses for driving HGVs or PSVs. I said to him, "Well I'll tell you what Doc, I certainly wouldn't like to drive without wearing a pair. 🤷‍♂️

Cheers,

Jock. :)
