Hi Guys (and girls). We have taken the plunge and ordered a new A Class Motorhome.
Can anyone recommend a good insurance company?
Our existing insurer is quoting 4 times our current premium :( despite us insuring our previous 3 motorhomes with them and never making a claim.

Hi,
I use Safeguard for my A class and have found them very good. The premium of around £2,000 was the cheapest I could find. Very few insurance companies will cover higher end vehicles They just don't quote. Try a insurance comparison site and once you key on the value its thanks but no thanks.

AIB quoted me £1500 this afternoon.
I said, "try harder".

They came back later this afternoon at £1050.
Their rep. did his best but they were way out.

Comfort were fine on the Hymer's about £500, been with them for about 14 years but for the Carthago they wanted £1000 and couldn't drivd it off the dealers forecourt without alarm and tracker.

NFU £720 no alarm or tracker required.

All the quotes I've had today (with the exception of the previously mentioned AIB) have started with a 5.

I'm waiting to get the renewal through and then make a decision.

They seem to shoot up when the value is over £100k.

Just got my renewal through from Aegeas and it went up (different motor) from 785 to 1181. They offered me 1080

This is for a tracker and alarmed 70,000 valuation with 10+ years NCB kept on drive RHD with European recovery

Looking round I got a best return (without using the 15% discount from MHF) of 663.36 from Ripe Insurance with 20 minutes of googling for the same details. I ll try again on Monday going through the discount system

Some of it depends where you want to go, we stick with NFU because they cover Morocco, Bosnia, Albania etc ( although only at 3rd party). We would prefer comp ( like in EU) but are prepared to take the risk because we havent found anywhere else that will cover us there. I can't believe some of the quotes on here, ours has just gone up to £409 (£80k 10k pa miles)

That's a bit steep.

Thank you.
There are several AIB's on the web.
Can you provide a little more detail please?

Have been with Comfort for 10 years now, and would be reluctant to change.

As you have a new motorhome, one of the benefits of Comfort is that you will get a 3-year new-for-old policy. So you may pay a little more, but this means that if your van is written off in year 3, you will get a brand new vehicle. When the vehicle is 3 years old (or older) the premium is based on current value. It's a good safeguard for a new vehicle if you think the slightly higher premium is worth it.

Another benefit I have found is that if you take out their Europe-wide accident and breakdown policy at the same time, it is really good value (it works well, I have used it). With other policies that have been quoted to me, I have found that either they are not interested in breakdown, or their policies are expensive.

So when I do my annual calculation of policies, I look at the combined cost of insurance and breakdown together, and this is often what makes Comfort good value.

WHEREVER you buy your insurance make sure that WINDSCREEN COVER is unlimited. Many years ago I signed up via Adrian Flux and when the documents arrived they only covered £1500. This had not been mentioned by their salesperson despite them knowing (surely) that my Aclass windscreen would exceed this cost.

They were prepared to cancel the policy and only charge me the £25 arrangement fee: I wasn't! Eventually a more senior person agreed that they had mis-sold the policy and I got all my money back.

A few years later my screen cracked when hit by a stone and replacement was £2999.97.

I knew, as a result of a previous years quote from Flux that their policy was all fur and no knickers.

It's a vital question that is now asked when renewing.

I have confirmed with NFU that they are aware it's an a-class motorhome with a very expensive windscreen and they said there are no special clauses.

NFU is essentially car insurance. Which is fine. The only real downside as far as I can tell is there's very little contents cover.

Yes, I had the same concern. As I have my home and contents cover with NFU aswell it was an easy job to add some extra cover on there for contents away from the home. Only a nominal increase on that policy.

Some of the terms and conditions are very car orientated too and don’t really apply to MH’s, but on the basis I have told them exactly what the vehicle is, and declared everything I think is relevant, I am assuming I will not have a problem with them.

Hopefully I never have occasion to find out!
