I'm lucky enough to have an Irish passport but my wife's is UK. I know that if she's travelling with me the 90/180 rule doesn't apply but we haven't put this to the test yet and I'm wondering if anyone has actually had the discussion with the French border officials?

EU-2004-38 provides the directive that in your case as a spouse of an EU passport holder you are afforded unencumbered rights to roam with your EU passport spouse!

In practical terms, in my experience, they (French border control) are still stamping my passport. However, I crossed from France to UK (Eurotunnel) in late April after 122 days in the EU and there was no need for me to show anything to substantiate that we were married or indeed anything else.

Five days later I flew on my own to Spain for five days and transitioned smoothly and unchallenged through all border control again.

IMHO, be prepared to defend and understand the part of EU 2004-38 that is important and carry copies and original marriage certificate, but don’t worry about it… after all, Brexit has not impacted this aspect in any way!

Thanks Janine, that's good to know. I've already written to the EU in both English and French and I've got a definitive reply confirming that the 90/180 rule doesn't apply if my wife is travelling with me, but we haven't tested this yet and my wife is worried she'll be locked up or, at the very least deported and refused re-entry!

How much do you have to 'bung' the frenchies to cart the wife off in irons

She's a Devon Dumpling.
I've got no chance of passing her off as one of them foreigner types.
