Now i ve read a number of posts here and scoured the .GOV site and didnt totaly understand all aspects
1 i tow a car with van, do i need a C1. I understood the C has having a total train wt of 3500kg.
2 i have AF, under control 6 years, does this mean automatic doctor referal and stress test?

A less important factor
Calmac ferry prices , anything >3500kg is a comercial vehicle. What is would be difference for a 6m van? Sorry but i didnt find their web site easy. (Is that just me)

Af must be reported and I've been waiting 9 months for license to come back,I am not in af now

No you have B . I would assume you have a pre 1997 licence so have B+E which allows a vehicle of 3,500kgs + a towed vehicle of 3500kgs with a maximum of 8,250kgs
here;

https://www.gov.uk/towing-with-car
Thanks that was my biggest concern.
If i'm "forced" back to 3500kg will just have ro reasses uses and what we take in van or just put it in "trailer".
How quickly/ easy is it to revert to 3500kg
Is it necessary to use Van wt/ alternative or is it feasible diy with copy of orig V5 and change section of V5 and tax change form, any experance of later.

Yes people have done it themselves I believe with a new weighbridge ticket showing time ,date, weight empty to show that the vehicle is able to be used below 3500kgs. You need to empty everything out ,empty diesel, water, no spare wheel nothing whatsoever to ensure the lowest weight possible.

For the AF, it will gave to be declared at the medical for your C1 and both our experiences here is that even controlled conditions they ask for a doctor’s report. We have had the dreaded letter saying our GP practice is working to rule so I guess this is one of the things they will not be doing. Hope not so for you.

Thanks Gus, had thought spare would come off (not origional) to make up for 550W solar may need to be more inventive. At least battries lighter.

So getting C1 isnt going to be quick or even possible. Has any one with AF eventualy got C1 back.
I have declared AF controlled by medication and a current C1/D4. At 70 the DVLA asked for a letter from a doctor giving my current status which was declared as "stable controlled by meds" and the license was issued in 2020 mid covid. After 3 years I renewed sending an accompanying letter which stated that the doctor had no need to see me unless something changed in my condition and I received a 3 year renewal without much delay which will take me to 76. Good luck.

Calmac ferries do not class motorhomes as commercial vehicle..
So they are charged per meter.... not by weight.@

I bought my first van (Murvi morello) with cal Mac in mind!
if it’s under 6m it’s the same price as a car. So I declared mine as 5.99m ( fiat ducato )
I once got pulled for being over 6m by some officious P&O jobs worth years ago and took my tow ball off in the car park, 4 bolts, hey presto under 6metres!

So not all doom and gloom, just depends on the doctors.

I read /missread? That motorhomes anything over 3500kg is regarded as a commercial vehicle.
If classed as a motorhome, you have to be over 12mtr to be commercial.

I don't think that a weigh bridge ticket for a van plated over 3500kgs but empty weighing less would cover a non C1 licence holder. Its the weight plate showing on the van that counts surely. Certainly not in the uk. ?

The ticket is a part of trying to replate at the 3500kg weight having previously been registered at 3500 then upplated. I had allready expected this possibility so had copied the V5 at this wt. (as well as the 2 attemps the DVLA took to get it right)

I applied for C1 in March and received my licence in September after being refered to the DVLC medic' dept.

I had valve repair 6 years ago due to AF, Regurgitation, murmur and tachycardic (I had no idea) just short of breath.

Back to your query.
I am reasonably fit and healthy, the driver medical went well and the doctor highlighted that in his opinion I was fit and able to drive including the C1 category etc' He also recommended that I add a covering letter with my application which I did.
I chased the application at about two months and was told it had been passed to medical. Chased medical a month later and told a letter was on its way. Letter stated I would need an echocardiogram at the DVLA's expense.
That was a result as I am supposed to have one annually on the NHS but this is now Bi-annul.
The echo was all done and dusted within a fortnight privately at the Derby Royal using the same dept' and staff as I always see, the only difference being that the consultant named on the paperwork got paid some cash.
The consultant emailed to say all done with no new problems.

So result, a bit slow but a free health check and the C1 for 3 years, roll on my 73rd birthday.

Good luck with yours :giggle:

Cheers Colin
