6 months long visa in France!

Has anyone used a six month visa in France yet? If so what did you do at the end of it - particularly regarding the 90 day Shengan rules?! Can you then cross into Switzerland, getting passport border stamp?
Where can I find the official regulations?
My son has just been given a 6 month visa no problems, and I would like to know if we can do something longer!

But! At the end of the 180 days do you have to get out of Shengan with a passport stamp? Then start a new 90/180, which means not being able to cross straight back into a Shengan country for a while. No problem out into Romania /Bulgaria for example, but of course it would take a few days to get get there!!
