50K miles now done are we run in yet?

What the hell does a crankshaft sensor do? never needed on any engines years ago to my knowledge, why is it needed now?I hope its nothing to do with reducing emissions, already too many thinks to go wrong on EGR's and DPF's.
Answers on a post card I guess.

Pleased for you DavidG58, Hopefully will be sorted now and you can get some more miles travelling soon.
Let us know the full outcome.

Hi David, that's good news. Did you ask about the Hymer/Merc ECU update?

Anthony

I've no idea why a crankshaft sensor is needed either, but I do know it's failure stopped the wifes little Peugeot 206 in its tracks!

Never had these problems on the good old BMC "A" and "B" series engines!

the crankshaft sensor monitors the rotational speed of the engine, feeding the output of the sensor to the ecu that uses it to control fuel injected

A crankshaft sensor is an electronic device used in an internal combustion engine, both petrol and diesel, to monitor the position or rotational speed of the crankshaft. This information is used by engine management systems to control the fuel injection or the ignition system timing and other engine parameters.

Ahh crankshaft sensor.

Go on ask me about the ones fitted to a poxy Vauxhall Corsa ?

When they machined/cast the hole where it fits they didn’t do a very good job.
On many a Corsa the sensor doesn’t sit square on and after a while the engine ecu throws a fit.

You have to file down a little tetter and all is well after.
Poxy cars ?

Returned to Mertrux today, new crankshaft sensor now fitted, fault codes all cleared

We hadn't had a repeat incident and the EML had not come on since

But all done for £142.20, by far the cheapest repair we have had to date (y)

Not sure if anybody understands or will benefit, but here are the fault code printouts, didn't read it before I left, possibly wish I hadnt now, looks like a few more issues lurking

I will say again that despite this issue the engine is running much better than ever

I bought a dedicated MB model code reader, that will also rest fault codes after the repairs. I think it was well worth the cost as it also works for the Smart toad. It has to be dedicated to the manufacturer as there are a LOT more codes that are not on the generic list, that ordinary reader give you. Pity you are not nearer.
MB are like a lot of other companies now in that you cannot get information for repairs as they will not release any workshop manual details. When my smartie went bonkers onto safe mode it was a sensor for the stability program. My fiest went tits up and it was the starter glowplugs and when the fourth one went so did it. They are not for starting above 2 degrees but part of the anti polution system hence the safe mode. I note you van has two out so expect the same in the future.

What a pile of read outs and potential future issues, what happened to the good old fashioned, reliable, simple engines.

Had a CA for a very short time (but that's another story). It was a great old bus and so easy to work on - Morocco? Yeh, why not? ::bigsmile:
